Fixes #1362.

Problem

A Logitech Pro X2 Superstrike on its LIGHTSPEED receiver (046d:c54d) is listed as a keyboard: the Devices card reads USB Receiver · Logitech · Keyboard with the keyboard placeholder, and the sidebar keeps that label even while the mouse page is open and its DPI/battery/polling read normally. Pressing Configure "fixes" it because the keyboard probe then fails and activateKeyboardClientNow falls back to the mouse client.

The classification is a descriptor-level guess: LogitechKeyboardHidClient.isSupported() accepts any PID in LOGITECH_RECEIVER_PRODUCTS plus a HID++ collection, and createSupportedClient returns null as soon as a keyboard client matches, so the mouse registry never gets a say. That ordering is deliberate (#1282) and has to stay: a receiver exposes the same VID/PID/name whether a mouse or a keyboard is paired, and a keyboard behind one must not be claimed by the generic HID++ mouse driver.

But the listing ignored what the app already knew. The connect fallback opens the receiver, asks its pairing slots, gets the Superstrike's model ids (40bd c0a8), and activates the mouse client — after which active owns that device. The card was rebuilt from the same descriptor guess anyway (kind: "keyboard", name falling back to device.productName, i.e. "USB Receiver"), so a connected mouse kept being drawn as an unpaired-keyboard guess. reconnectAuthorizedDevice walks the same path on every load, so this happens without the user pressing anything.

Approach

listingClient(device, active) returns the live client when it owns the device, and otherwise falls through to the existing createSupportedClient guess. sidebarEntries uses it, so the entry takes the mouse branch when a mouse is connected: the name comes from the status the driver read (PRO X2 SUPERSTRIKE), kind is mouse, and the artwork resolves from that name instead of the keyboard placeholder.

No new state and no change to the keyboard-first ordering: an unopened receiver still lists keyboard-first, which is the only safe guess until its slots are read. The first failure mode (a keyboard paired to a receiver) is unaffected because active is null while a keyboard is connected — activateKeyboardClientNow clears it.

Tests

npm test (636 pass), npm run build, npm run size (MAIN 87%, CSS 99%, JS 99%).

New test in src/device/device-clients.test.ts covers the receiver as a listing entry: keyboard-first with no live client (the #1282 ordering is pinned), the live mouse client once one owns the receiver (#1362), and another device's live client leaving the receiver alone. Verified the test fails with listingClient reduced to createSupportedClient.

Risk

Low. The change is one call site in an entry builder; nothing about activation, probing, or driver choice moves. The only behaviour that changes is what an already-connected device is called in the sidebar and Devices home.

Out of scope

  • The first listing of an unopened receiver still says keyboard, because whether a keyboard is paired is unknowable from descriptors. Closing that would mean opening every authorized receiver during the listing (HID++ traffic interleaving with the active client), which this PR deliberately avoids. In practice the saved-device reconnect opens it on load, so the card corrects itself a couple of seconds later.
  • The wasted probe. Connect still tries the keyboard client first for a receiver and falls back after Logitech receiver has no supported keyboard paired, costing a couple of seconds. Caching that outcome across reloads is a separate change.

Note

Fix receivers showing connected mice as keyboards in device listing

  • Shared receivers (e.g. Logitech unifying, Keychron Link-KM) can expose both keyboard and mouse interfaces. When the keyboard descriptor claim won, a connected mouse was listed as a keyboard.
  • Adds a persisted receiver-role store in mouse-receivers.ts keyed by receiver identity, recording which interface is the mouse. createSupportedClient and clientSupportScore consult this record before the keyboard-first check, and isSharedReceiver/siblingMouseClient group interfaces by receiver key.
  • On a keyboard connection failure, controller.ts now falls back to a mouse client on the same device or a sibling interface, and records the receiver as a mouse receiver on the explicit "no supported keyboard paired" result. sidebarEntries uses the live client for the selected device.
  • Behavioral Change: a remembered mouse interface scores 20,000 in clientSupportScore while its keyboard-claimed siblings score zero, so interface selection on such receivers changes. Forgetting the receiver record (via forgetMouseReceiver on failed activation) restores prior behavior.

Macroscope summarized 4c6d1f8.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Device listings now reflect the client associated with the selected device. Logitech receivers are no longer incorrectly listed as keyboards before their mouse interface is identified, and activity from another device won’t change their listing.
    • After a receiver responds as a mouse, it is remembered so its mouse interface is preferred in future listings and device selection. If mouse activation fails, that record is cleared.
    • Keyboard connection can fall back to a compatible mouse interface on the same receiver when appropriate, helping shared keyboard-and-mouse receivers connect correctly.

…board

A LIGHTSPEED receiver is claimed as a keyboard by VID/PID alone, so the
listing shows a mouse on one as "USB Receiver · Keyboard" with keyboard art
until the receiver is opened and its pairing slots answer (#1282). Once a
mouse client owns the device that answer is ground truth, not a guess, so the
listing now takes it instead of re-deriving the keyboard claim.

Walkthrough

The change adds persistent mouse-role records for shared HID receivers. Client selection and sidebar listing use those records and active clients. When keyboard activation fails, the controller can search authorized sibling interfaces for a mouse client.

Changes: Shared receiver mouse handling

Explanation

[#1362] The live-client listing path is implemented. listingClient returns the active client for the selected receiver, so the mouse name, kind: "mouse", and mouse artwork can be shown. The tests also preserve keyboard-first behavior for an unopened 046d:c54d receiver. However, the required regression case for a receiver with a catalogued keyboard paired is missing. The current tests cover descriptor claims, a remembered mouse role, and another receiver model, but they do not provide catalogued keyboard slot/model data or verify that the keyboard client remains selected in that case.

Resolution

Add an automated test for a 046d:c54d receiver whose pairing slots report a catalogued keyboard. Verify that keyboard selection remains active and that the mouse fallback or remembered-role path does not claim that receiver.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The Logitech receiver listing fix is in scope. The PR also changes unrelated Keychron Link-KM behavior. siblingMouseClient falls back from a VIA keyboard interface to an M6 mouse interface, and receiver-role scoring changes Link-KM logical-device selection. The added test explicitly covers this behavior. #1362 does not request Keychron Link-KM activation or selection changes.

Resolution

Remove the Keychron Link-KM fallback, receiver-scoring changes, and related tests from this PR, or link an active issue that requires those changes.

Approvability

Verdict: Approved at 4c6d1f8

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Receiver listings and reconnects now prefer an interface that has answered as a mouse. The change keeps transient keyboard failures from creating persistent mouse preferences and clears those preferences when mouse activation fails, limiting its impact to device classification and connection selection.

Add controller-level coverage for the active-receiver sidebar entry.

The new test calls listingClient directly. No test references sidebarEntries or refreshSidebar. At src/device/controller.ts:3058, sidebarEntries passes selected ? active : null into listingClient. If that call reverts to createSupportedClient(device), the receiver takes the keyboard branch at controller.ts:3059, and every current test still passes.

The controllerHarness() in src/device/profile-write-ownership.test.ts exports only testSelect, testDisconnect, and testReading. It also replaces ./device-clients.ts with a no-op proxy. A test for this path needs a test export for sidebarEntries, and the harness must load the real device-clients module. With that change, the test can assert that a receiver with a live mouse client lists as a mouse, and that the same receiver without one stays a keyboard entry.

A shared receiver exposes the same VID/PID/name and interfaces whether a
keyboard or a mouse is paired, so device matching stays keyboard-first
(#1282). The app never remembered that a receiver turned out to carry a
mouse, so every listing, reconnect and switch went back to the keyboard
guess: the Devices card read "USB Receiver · Keyboard", connect showed the
keyboard reading state before falling back, and #1364 only covered the
card of the open device.

- mouse-receivers.ts records a receiver (VID:PID:name) and the usage pages
of the interface that read as a mouse, in localStorage, once a mouse
client reads it. A failed mouse activation drops the record, so a newly
paired keyboard is probed first again.
- createSupportedClient and clientSupportScore send a remembered receiver
through that interface and demote its keyboard-claimed siblings, so the
sidebar, Devices home, reconnect and select all agree.
- The Keychron Link-KM (3434:d026/d029) has the same overlap: VIA claims
its raw ff60 interface (score 900) over the M6 on ffc1 (score 7). A failed
keyboard read now falls back to a sibling mouse interface of the same
receiver, as the Logitech path already did for its own interface.

Review follow-ups on the receiver memory:

- Key Bridge receivers by Bridge's own session key, as logical groups do,
so a second receiver of the same model over Bridge is not taken for the
  one that was read.
- Record the answering interface by page/usage, not page alone. A Logitech
receiver's short and long HID++ interfaces both sit on 0xff00, so both
counted as the mouse and tied. The mouse interface also keeps the
driver's own score on top, so its preference between interfaces (Bolt's
  long-report collection) still counts.
- The sibling fallback after a failed keyboard read connects the mouse but
no longer records it. Only "no supported keyboard paired" proves there is
no keyboard; a keyboard that failed to answer would otherwise be pushed
  aside on every later connect.

Preserve keyboard access without gating the mouse record on noKeyboardPaired.

When a mouse activation records a shared receiver while a keyboard interface is also present, sidebarEntries selects the remembered mouse and does not create a keyboard card. Clicking that card recomputes the group candidates, where the remembered mouse outranks the keyboard sibling, so the keyboard cannot be selected through the sidebar.

Do not apply the fallback’s noKeyboardPaired gate to all direct activations. The Keychron Link-KM test requires the mouse interface to remain selectable after it answers. Add a keyboard-specific sidebar selection path that carries and activates the KeyboardClient instead of recomputing the mouse-first candidates.

Acknowledged, leaving this for a follow-up. A receiver with both a keyboard and a mouse paired gets one card, and selectAuthorizedDevice was already mouse-first among a group's candidates before this PR, so clicking that card never reached the keyboard. A Logitech receiver with a keyboard paired is never recorded here, because its keyboard read succeeds and nothing activates the mouse. What this does change is the reload reconnect on a Keychron Link-KM whose mouse was connected directly. The real fix is to read the receiver's pairing table and list one card per paired device. That is in progress as a pairing-register reader in @openmouse/protocol.
