feat(arbiter): 10-byte user mode for the Polar 65+ so SuperTap works - #13
The Polar 65+ connects now, but SuperTap never enables: readStatus returns userMode: null. Root cause is a second per-model difference beyond the 0xFF02 page from #12.
Evidence (reporter's USB captures + live vendor bundle):
The board answers GetUserMode with 10 bytes: 00 00 00 01 01 00 1f 21 00 00 = [layoutIndex, reserved1, reserved2, mode, checkFlag, flag, key0, key1] + 2 pad bytes. Its SetUserMode writes are 10 bytes in the same shape.
The current app2 vendor bundle has both codec generations side by side: the old 6-byte classes and new DATA_SIZE=10 set / >=8-byte get classes. The 65+ (fh protocol class) uses the new ones.
Our codec only spoke 6 bytes, so decodeArbiterUserMode returned null on the 10-byte reply, readStatus nulled the field, and the web SuperTap card could never enable.
Change: per-model userModeBytes flag (default 6, 10 for 0xA009 only — everything else is byte-identical to before). Decode/encode and the set read-back comparison key off it. Docs record both wire generations, plus the reporter's decode of the FN reserved codes (202 = color switch, etc.).
Verification: full suite 385 pass / 0 fail (new: 10-byte codec vectors from the exact captured bytes + a fake-board round trip); npm run build clean. Needs a hardware retest: SuperTap toggle should now stick.
Note
Add 10-byte user mode support for Polar 65+ in arbiter protocol
Adds a userModeBytes property (6 or 10) to ArbiterProduct, with a catalog factory default of six bytes and a ten-byte setting for the Polar 65+ entry in index.ts
decodeArbiterUserMode and encodeArbiterUserModeWrite accept a wire-size argument. Ten-byte mode reads current-generation header positions and pads writes with reserved zero bytes; six-byte behavior is unchanged
hid.ts passes the matched product's wire size on read and write, and the post-write comparison now checks the full outgoing body length instead of always six bytes
Documents the six- and ten-byte formats and Polar 65+ shortcuts in arbiter-support.md
Risk: Polar 65+ user-mode replies under eight bytes now fail decoding; other products must keep six-byte replies or the default-size decode rejects them
The Polar 65+ answers GetUserMode with ten bytes (eight-byte header
[layoutIndex, reserved1, reserved2, mode, checkFlag, flag, keyIndex0,
keyIndex1] plus two zero pad bytes) and expects ten-byte SetUserMode
writes, matching the current app2 vendor bundle. The driver only spoke
the original six-byte format, so decode returned null and SuperTap
could never enable. Adds a per-model userModeBytes flag (default 6,
10 for 0xA009) used by decode, encode and the read-back comparison,
plus tests built on the exact bytes captured from the board.

Walkthrough
The Arbiter catalog now identifies Polar 65+ as using a ten-byte user-mode format. The codec and HID driver handle the model-specific format while retaining six-byte support for other products. The documentation also describes both formats and owner-decoded Polar 65+ FN-layer functions.

The catalog assigns Polar 65+ a ten-byte user-mode format. The codec supports six-byte and ten-byte formats. Tests cover ten-byte encoding, decoding, and validation. The documentation describes the formats and their payload requirements.
Product-specific HID reads and writes src/drivers/arbiter/hid.ts
User-mode reads and writes use the connected product’s configured wire size. Echoed payload checks use the encoded frame size.
OpenMouse-Project/keyboard-protocol#11 — That PR adds the Polar 65+ catalog entry; this PR extends it with the ten-byte user-mode format and uses that format for reads and writes.
No confirmed regression blocks merging. The Polar 65+ request-size discrepancy remains worth checking during the planned hardware retest.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Adds the Polar 65+ user-mode format needed for SuperTap while preserving the existing format for other keyboards. Model-specific selection and full write read-back verification keep the impact narrowly bounded.

encodeArbiterShortRead() sets dataSize to 0 for user-mode reads. The documented GetUserMode request uses dataSize 6. A Polar 65+ firmware that validates this field may reject the read before SuperTap confirmation.
Make the request use the Polar 65+ captured size, and keep the documentation consistent if that size is not 6. The ten-byte reply decoder does not change the request field.
