Python and Ruby authentication now support the OAuth client-credentials grant through OPENC3_API_CLIENT_SECRET. Authentication factories select Keycloak authentication when the secret is configured. Token requests use configured timeouts, and logs redact passwords, client secrets, and refresh tokens.

The Python environment exposes OPENC3_API_CLIENT_SECRET. Python and Ruby authentication factories select Keycloak authentication when the secret is configured. Empty secrets use the existing fallback paths. Tests cover factory selection and fallback behavior.
Keycloak authentication uses the client-credentials grant when a nonempty secret is configured. It stores the access token and expiry, clears refresh-token state, and renews tokens when absent or expired. Token requests use configured connect and read timeouts. Logs redact passwords, client secrets, and refresh tokens. Tests cover token creation, precedence, reuse, renewal, timeouts, and redaction.
The new client-credentials login works and no longer logs secrets from requests. Two security concerns should be resolved or explicitly accepted before merge. The client secret can still be sent over an HTTP Keycloak URL. In Ruby debug mode, successful token responses are printed to stdout, exposing bearer tokens.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to ff1ab
Machine-to-machine authentication adds a reusable service credential to paths that permit unencrypted transport and expose secrets in debug diagnostics. Normal logging redacts the secret, and exploitation requires access to an exposed network segment or sensitive diagnostics. The service account’s deployed permissions remain unconfirmed.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · observed: The new grant sends a reusable client secret to the configured token endpoint without enforcing HTTPS. Python retains an HTTP default. An observer on an unprotected network segment could obtain the secret and authenticate as the configured service account. HTTP acceptance existed before this PR, but client-secret exposure through it is new.
Low · security · observed: Debug diagnostics now include the client secret: Ruby prints the raw request body, while Python retains it in request diagnostics and includes it in authentication errors. Readers of those diagnostics can recover service-account credentials. Normal-mode redaction is present; the added exposure is conditional on debug mode and diagnostic access.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A disclosed client secret enables authentication as the configured Keycloak client while that credential remains valid. Independently attackable scope is that client’s effective service-account authority, including downstream APIs accepting its tokens. Repository evidence does not establish tenant, asset, data-store, environment, or cross-service limits, and does not support assuming realm-wide authority.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The retained transport finding is supported by a new secret-bearing POST through an endpoint accepting HTTP. Exploitation requires observation or interception of an unprotected transport path; attacker control of the configured URL is not required. Production network protection was not established.
observed — The retained diagnostic finding adds client-secret exposure to a pre-existing debug policy. Ruby emits the raw request during debug authentication; Python authentication failures include its stored raw request. Exploitation requires access to those diagnostics. Non-debug request logging redacts the client secret.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The intentional identity transition is from configured user or offline credentials to a service-account identity. Explicit request tokens still override generated tokens, and inspected downstream requests continue through the existing authorization boundary. These controls counter a claim of automatic request-user override or a demonstrated authorization bypass.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — On the normal client-credentials path, token-request transport or status failures propagate rather than silently falling back to password or anonymous authentication. Acquisition can be attempted again on a later call. This conclusion does not cover external invocation of the pre-existing refresh-token helper, which mutates shared token state outside the normal mutex.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Require authenticated encrypted transport for client-secret token requests and redact client secrets independently of debug mode. Keep diagnostic access restricted even after request-secret redaction.
proposed — Before production enablement, verify the dedicated client’s least-privilege roles, tenant restrictions, credential rotation, and downstream service-account interpretation. Treat these as deployment requirements, not controls established by this PR.

The missing timeout predates this PR, but the new client-credentials flow now reaches this request while auth_mutex is held. If Keycloak accepts the connection and stops responding, requests.Session.post can remain blocked and delay concurrent authentication calls. Pass explicit, bounded connect and read timeouts to this request.

Update the Keycloak token POST in the authentication flow to pass explicit,
bounded connect and read timeouts to `self.http.post`. Keep the existing request

Remove the duplicated content-type literal flagged by SonarCloud.
The supplied SonarCloud check fails on this third "application/x-www-form-urlencoded" literal. Define one constant and use it for the three authentication request branches.

Addressed the outside-diff timeout follow-up too: the Keycloak token POST now passes explicit bounded connect/read timeouts, and the duplicated form-urlencoded content-type literal is collapsed behind a shared constant in both implementations.

Do not print successful token responses in Ruby debug output.
OpenC3KeycloakAuthentication prints resp.body when JsonDRb.debug? is true. A successful client-credentials response therefore exposes access_token in stdout. The response logging statement predates this PR, and password and refresh-token grants already use the same path. The PR nevertheless extends this exposure to the new client-credentials workflow.
The Python mirror stores resp.text in self.log[1], but its print(self.log[1]) statement is commented out. It does not emit successful responses to stdout.
Omit the successful response body from Ruby logs and add a successful client-credentials regression test that asserts the token is absent from debug output.
