What changed

  • Match string operands to state names ignoring case in check, wait and wait_check, so 'Connected' matches CONNECTED
  • Accept an unquoted state name, e.g. == Connected, instead of raising NameError
  • Only call get_item when the operand contains a string and the type is not RAW, so numeric comparisons add no API call
  • Add operand_contains_string and upcase_state_names to extract.rb and extract.py, shared by both Python api_shared copies
  • Update scripting-api.md, which said state values must be quoted

Why it changed

Closes #4046

Testing strategy

Updated unit tests, ensuring appropriate code coverage. Playwright tests pass

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Telemetry checks and waits now recognize valid state names whether quoted or unquoted, and match state names without regard to letter case. This also applies to state names inside collections. RAW values and ordinary strings continue to compare exactly.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified how string comparisons differ from Ruby and Python expression comparisons, including quoting, case sensitivity, and handling of state names.

- Match string operands to state names ignoring case in check, wait
and wait_check, so 'Connected' matches CONNECTED
- Accept an unquoted state name, e.g. == Connected, instead of raising
  NameError
- Only call get_item when the operand contains a string and the type is
not RAW, so numeric comparisons add no API call
- Add operand_contains_string and upcase_state_names to extract.rb and
extract.py, shared by both Python api_shared copies
- Update scripting-api.md, which said state values must be quoted

Walkthrough

The check and wait comparison paths now resolve recognized telemetry state names without case sensitivity. Matching state names can be unquoted. RAW comparisons and non-state strings retain exact matching behavior.

Changes: Telemetry State Comparisons

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse and normalize state operands
openc3/python/openc3/utilities/extract.py, openc3/lib/openc3/script/extract.rb, openc3/python/test/utilities/test_extract.py, openc3/spec/script/extract_spec.rb
The Python and Ruby extractors resolve matching state names case-insensitively. Tests cover unquoted names, collections, unmatched strings, and cases where item lookup is skipped.
Pass telemetry context to comparison parsing
openc3/lib/openc3/script/api_shared.rb, openc3/python/openc3/api/api_shared.py, openc3/python/openc3/script/api_shared.py
The check and wait paths pass telemetry type, item identity, and scope to comparison parsing and its item-metadata lookup.
Validate and document state comparisons
openc3/spec/script/api_shared_spec.rb, openc3/python/test/api/test_api_shared.py, openc3/python/test/script/test_api_shared.py, docs.openc3.com/docs/guides/scripting-api.md
Tests cover case-insensitive state matching, exact RAW and ordinary string comparisons, and errors for unknown unquoted words. The guide documents these rules for check, wait, and wait_check, and clarifies expression comparison behavior.

Explanation

Issue [#4046] requires case-insensitive state comparisons in check, wait, and wait_check. The changes parse state operands, resolve supported unquoted state names, and normalize state-name comparisons. Tests cover quoted and unquoted names, mixed case, collections, unknown names, and RAW behavior. The changes also update the scripting API documentation.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The implementation, tests, and documentation directly support issue [#4046]. The get_item lookup restriction supports the comparison behavior and avoids unnecessary lookups for numeric and RAW operands. The summary shows no unrelated product changes.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 40.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 30 functions across 10 files. calmonroe and others added 2 commits October 27, 2026 18:49
- Move _extract_comparison and _states into a single
extract_comparison in extract.rb and extract.py, removing the copy
duplicated across both Python api_shared files
- Add extract_comparison unit tests covering mixed lists, unquoted
states, items without states and when the item is looked up
- Prefix the unused stdout block parameter in api_shared_spec.rb

Refs #4046

Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Keep integration coverage of case insensitive states in the api
suite, which uses the real get_item
- Reduce the script suite to checking when API_SERVER.get_item is
called, since extract_comparison is now unit tested in test_extract

- Line 2703: Update the string-comparison guidance for check, wait, and
wait_check to say that non-state strings must be quoted, while eligible state
names may be unquoted; remove the blanket statement that string values must be
quoted and keep the existing eligibility rules and examples consistent across
all three notes.

- Around line 350-352: Update comparison parsing in
extract_operator_and_operand_from_comparison and the corresponding Ruby
extraction parser to accept bare state names inside in-lists, resolving each
element against the item's states while continuing to reject arbitrary
expressions.

- Resolve bare words through an optional resolver in extract_operand

- Parse Python collections element by element when literal_eval
rejects them, and look up the item only once per comparison
- Clarify that only non-state strings must be quoted in the check,

Looks great. I added a PR to make a note about the expression APIs and changed the error message for the existing Uninitialized constant to Unknown state.

…4182)

An unquoted word in a check, wait or wait_check comparison is now
resolved as a state name, so the error says it is not a known state
rather than mimicking Ruby's uninitialized constant. Document that the
expression APIs evaluate code, so strings must be quoted and match exactly.
