to_config, reset and as_json loop over self.processors.values(). Before, they iterated the dict as if it were a list of pairs. to_config also calls processor.to_config() now, where before it referenced the method without calling it.
to_config iterates self.meta.items() when writing META lines.
PacketItem.to_config (Python):
Writes a non-default endianness. It was missing the f-string prefix, so it wrote a literal {self.endianness}.
Looks up per-state hazardous, messages_disabled and state_colors with .get(). Before, a KeyError was raised when only some states had one of these set.
A hazardous state with an empty description is still written as HAZARDOUS.
Why it changed
self.processors is a dict, so for _, processor in self.processors iterates the processor names and tries to unpack each name into two values. Packet.reset(), as_json() and to_config() raised ValueError for any packet with processors. The other to_config bugs produced invalid or incomplete config, or crashed, for items with states and items with a non-default endianness. The Ruby versions don't have these problems.
Testing strategy
Added 5 tests: processors in reset/as_json, processors and META in Packet.to_config, attributes set on only some states, and a non-default endianness in PacketItem.to_config. All 5 fail on the old code. uv run pytest test/packets: 738 passed. ruff check / ruff format --check are clean.
Packet configurations now correctly preserve processor settings and metadata, and display non-default byte order accurately.
State settings are serialized according to packet type: telemetry states include configured colors, while command states include hazardous and message-disabling options.
Packet resets and JSON output now correctly handle processors.
Tests
Added coverage for processor and metadata serialization, reset behavior, packet-type-specific state settings, and byte order.
…dling
Packet looped over the processors and meta dicts as if they were lists of
pairs, so to_config, reset and as_json raised for any packet with
processors. PacketItem.to_config wrote a literal "{self.endianness}",
raised KeyError when only some states had colors, hazardous or
DISABLE_MESSAGES set, and dropped hazardous states with no description.

Walkthrough
Packet serialization now handles processor values and metadata key-value pairs. Packet-item configuration writes the endianness value and serializes state attributes according to packet type. Tests cover processor handling and packet-item configuration output.

Summary
Processor handling and packet serialization openc3/python/openc3/packets/packet.py, openc3/python/test/packets/test_packet.py
Packet methods iterate over processor values. to_config calls each processor’s to_config() method and iterates over metadata key-value pairs. Tests cover processor reset, JSON output, and configuration output.
Configuration writes the item’s endianness and serializes state attributes according to packet type. Tests cover state-specific attributes and endianness defaults.
The supplied changes do not establish an outstanding issue that would prevent merging after normal checks.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to 166b2
The changes repair existing packet-library behavior without adding permissions, changing ownership, or weakening configuration validation. No material security risk was found to be introduced or worsened.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated effect is on packet instances and their registered processors. The inspected changes do not establish broader tenant, service, credential, or deployment exposure.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Processor configuration already selects and instantiates code, validates the Processor type, and registers the instance on its packet. Packet.process already invokes registered processors. The repaired reset and serialization methods use those existing instances rather than introducing another loading or authorization path.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Reset preserves the SYSTEM META exemption, clears packet metadata and cache, then resets processors sequentially without rollback. Repository statistics and watermark resets are repeatable assignments. A failing custom reset can leave partial state; concurrent production use was not established.

to_config wrote HAZARDOUS and DISABLE_MESSAGES on telemetry states and colors
on command states, which the state parser rejects, so the generated config
could not be loaded back. An empty hazardous description no longer leaves a
trailing space. Applied to Ruby and Python to keep their output identical.
