What changed

  • Add INST/INST2 MEMDUMP command whose CRC over OFFSET and SIZE is set by memdump_cmd_crc_conversion and checked by sim_inst
  • Add MEMDUMP telemetry with a variable DATA block, the target CRC and ground CALC_CRC/CRC_OK items from crc32_conversion
  • Add MEMDUMP_FAULT so sim_inst can flip a bit in or drop the next dump
  • Add memdump procedures that retry bad or missing chunks, wait out link loss and resume from a bucket checkpoint before put_target_file
  • Add a MEMDUMP screen to send dumps, inject faults and run the script

Why it changed

Allows us to show file streaming capability in COSMOS

Testing strategy

Add playwright test for MEMDUMP screen in telem viewer. All existing tests pass
Manually tested screen and script for expected demo behavior

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added memory-dump commands and telemetry for both demo targets, including dump data and CRC status.
    • Added screens to request and inspect memory dumps, with controls to simulate CRC errors.
    • Added procedures to retrieve a larger memory region in chunks, verify each chunk, retry failed requests, and save the completed dump.
    • Added options to retry a chunk after a CRC mismatch or stop the dump.

- Add INST/INST2 MEMDUMP command whose CRC over OFFSET and SIZE is set
by memdump_cmd_crc_conversion and checked by sim_inst
- Add MEMDUMP telemetry with a variable DATA block, the target CRC and
  ground CALC_CRC/CRC_OK items from crc32_conversion
- Add MEMDUMP_FAULT so sim_inst can flip a bit in or drop the next dump
- Add memdump procedures that retry bad or missing chunks, wait out
link loss and resume from a bucket checkpoint before put_target_file
- Add a MEMDUMP screen to send dumps, inject faults and run the script

Walkthrough

Adds MEMDUMP commands and telemetry for INST and INST2. Their simulators validate requests and generate dump responses. Procedures retrieve and verify chunks, then upload and check the completed dump. Screens provide command controls and display dump data and CRC status.

Changes: Memory Dump

Layer / File(s) Summary
Memory-dump protocol and CRC conversions
targets/INST/cmd_tlm/{inst_cmds.txt,inst_tlm.txt}, targets/INST/lib/{crc32_conversion.rb,memdump_cmd_crc_conversion.rb}, targets/INST2/cmd_tlm/{inst_cmds.txt,inst_tlm.txt}, targets/INST2/lib/{crc32_conversion.py,memdump_cmd_crc_conversion.py}
Both targets define MEMDUMP commands and telemetry with variable-length data and CRC fields. CRC conversions calculate request and telemetry checksums.
Simulator request and response handling
targets/INST/lib/sim_inst.rb, targets/INST2/lib/sim_inst.py
Both simulators validate request CRC and size, generate address-based data, and queue telemetry responses. The BAD_CRC option flips a data bit after the CRC is calculated.
Chunk retrieval, verification, and display
targets/INST/procedures/memdump.rb, targets/INST2/procedures/memdump.py, targets/INST/screens/memdump.txt, targets/INST2/screens/memdump.txt, playwright/tests/{cmd-tlm-server/tlm-pkts.p.spec.ts,data-extractor.p.spec.ts,tlm-viewer.p.spec.ts}
The procedures request chunks, handle link and response timeouts, filter stale responses, and verify chunk CRCs. They upload the completed dump, read it back, and check its contents or CRC. Screens provide dump controls and display dump metadata and data. Playwright tests cover the MEMDUMP display and updated target and packet searches.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to bd448

The MEMDUMP protocol, retry flow, telemetry CRC handling, and final-chunk buffering have no confirmed merge-blocking issues.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to bd448

The new flow generates synthetic demo data rather than reading real memory, bounds individual requests and checks received chunks before uploading them. No introduced security vulnerability was established. Recovery remains in-memory, and storage publication and concurrent-run guarantees are not fully established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated new effects are synthetic telemetry for the selected demo target and fixed-prefix dump-file writes within the procedure's existing script scope. The inspected flow does not establish arbitrary memory disclosure, arbitrary output-path selection or new cross-scope authority. Effective deployment permissions were not verified.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The specifically flagged value symbol is a locator helper declared inside the new Playwright test and called with literal telemetry-item names. It does not introduce a production entrypoint. The linked fixture exports test utilities and is unchanged in the full PR comparison.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — CRC checks provide accidental-corruption detection, not sender authentication or authorization. The screens invoke the existing command and script interfaces; storage uses the existing scoped helpers. No new identity mechanism is introduced by these inspected callers, and server-side authorization remains outside the verified source coverage.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Concurrent requests can overwrite each simulator's single pending response, and same-target runs started within one second select the same output name. These are ownership limitations rather than established security failures here: requests are retried, accepted chunks require matching coordinates and CRC, and the current procedures generate identical deterministic content. Concurrent execution and backend overwrite behavior were not exercised.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat(demo): add MEMDUMP memory dump with CRC checks and recovery" matches the main change. The PR adds a MEMDUMP command, telemetry packet, CRC conversions, simulator support, a recovery procedure, and a screen in the demo target. The title names the primary feature and its CRC and recovery aspects. It omits the MEMDUMP_FAULT injection and the file streaming purpose, which is expected for a short title.

If you squash the commits might want to tweak the PR description

From Claude:

  • MEMDUMP_FAULT: it's now the BAD_CRC parameter on MEMDUMP.
  • "drop the next dump": there's no drop fault.
  • "resume from a bucket checkpoint": there's no checkpoint. The dump is held in memory and written once at the end.
  • "wait out link loss": it only waits when sending the command fails, not when a response goes missing.
