fix(script runner): stop goto from the debug prompt deadlocking - #4049
Conversation
- Route goto called off the run thread through execute_while_paused in Ruby and Python, since the debug prompt runs on the thread that processes go/step/stop - Add RunningScript.run_thread? to detect the run thread in Ruby - Add Ruby specs and a Python test covering both threads Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

What changed in this PR
No factual issues. This PR prevents debug-prompt goto calls from deadlocking Script Runner.
Changes:
- Defers off-run-thread
gotoexecution to the paused script thread. - Preserves direct execution for in-script calls.
- Adds equivalent Ruby and Python tests.

CodeRabbit finding on local variable binding looks reasonable to address to me. Otherwise looks good!
A goto typed at the debug prompt is queued for the run thread, which only bound the paused script's variables when the target was the same file. Pass an explicit binding so it matches a direct goto call. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Problem
Typing
goto <line>at the Script Runner debug prompt while paused hangs the script for good. After that it ignores go, step, pause and stop, and the only way out is to kill therun_scriptprocess.The
debugmessage is handled inline in the Redis subscribe callback inrun_script.rb/run_script.py, sogotoruns the script on the subscriber thread. When that copy of the script reaches a pause point (a breakpoint, step mode orpause),wait_for_go_or_stopwaits for@go/@stop. Only the subscriber thread sets those, and it is the thread that is waiting, so it deadlocks.Fix
When
gotois called from any thread other than the script's run thread, it now hands the request toexecute_while_paused, the same path the editor's goto uses. The paused run thread then runs it fromcheck_execute_while_paused. Agotoinside the script itself still runs directly.gotoinopenc3/lib/openc3/utilities/running_script.rb, plus a newRunningScript.run_thread?helpergotoinopenc3/python/openc3/utilities/running_script.pyIf the script isn't paused, at a breakpoint or in an error state, the debug-prompt
gotoprints the existing "Cannot execute selection or goto unless script is paused…" message instead of hanging.Tests
openc3-cosmos-script-runner-api/spec/models/running_script_spec.rb, one case callinggotofrom another thread (hands off) and one from the run thread (callsstart). Both covergoto(line)andgoto(file, line).openc3/python/test/utilities/test_running_script.pywith the same two cases. Importingrunning_script.pyreplaces functions inopenc3.scriptfor the whole process, so the test imports it inside the class and restores those modules afterward. Not covered
Other script-running calls typed at the debug prompt, such as
start(...)orload_utility(...), can still hang the same way if they reach a breakpoint. They aren't changed here.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
