Outcome

Hermes inference-switch probes retain HTTP status and response bodies for bounded retries. Protected GPU qualification reuses the CPU-tested OpenClaw image from the same attempt, and waits for asynchronous Ollama shutdown before verifying cleanup.

Reason

PR #12603 exposed lost HTTP error evidence and a duplicate OpenClaw build that consumed about 12 minutes of the 45-minute provider budget. The first focused E2E run also exposed a Docker 28 archive-format mismatch, now repaired.

Related issues

Refs #12603.

Changes

  • Retry HTTP 408, 429, and 5xx responses, plus confirmed body-read timeouts after HTTP 200 headers. Preserve terminal authentication, policy, and malformed-input checks, three attempts, five-second delays, and selected-model/PONG assertions.
  • Export the immutable CPU image under its revision tag; create a missing tag and reject a conflicting one. Bind the archive to candidate, workflow, cohort, platform, runtime user, base reference, and config digest before loading and publishing it to the isolated GPU registry.
  • Accept Docker 28's re-encoded OCI manifest while checking its descriptor hash/size, CPU config digest, ordered Docker/OCI layer references, and streamed layer bytes and sizes before Docker loading. The registry manifest remains independently verified against its immutable source reference.
  • Keep offline builds for older producers without a handoff, verified earlier-attempt inputs, legacy root runtime, Hermes, and Deep Agents Code. Invalid existing handoffs fail closed.
  • Wait up to five seconds for asynchronous Ollama shutdown, preserving the 30-second command deadline and failure for a surviving daemon.
  • Document that premerge GitHub GPU execution uses trusted-main helpers. Candidate helper changes require separate authorized local validation.

Verification

Latest repair: 6d8ee971bcb5120845070f72c33b0eb8073c4026.

  • 52 focused tests passed: all 45 image-handoff tests and seven growth guardrails. Binary-layer cases cover a valid 9 MiB layer, same-size content corruption, and truncated content with updated archive receipts; invalid layers reject before any Docker call. New cases cover re-encoded export and restore, and rejection of a self-consistent archive selecting a different config. The re-encoding regressions fail before the repair. Normal signed-commit hooks, pre-push publication validation, and CLI TypeScript checks passed; GitHub verified the published signature.
  • Real Docker 28.0.4 export/restore passed with the final helper: registry manifest sha256:f6308ca91934963b98fc6b7dfa8c60216c3eb03302152c0a5781c62c872eea9f differed from archive manifest sha256:d0d412028ac31fb532f53f98a46143e477e6e88c8f30b03cbc40dd63ce796697. After removing the producer image, restoration into an empty Docker store preserved config and all 105 RootFS layers. Final helper SHA-256: 5e287e7f771ce2bfe77dc0fbb5e041629beac9b543b401b688a2b7142b215079. Authorized Brev execution used an isolated network namespace and Docker store; private daemons stopped and existing host containers were unchanged. The image fixture is from 031fc79c5, not a newly built final-candidate image.
  • Final-candidate CI passed, including all twelve test shards and static checks. Image qualification passed, including amd64, arm64, and rootless Podman. Focused E2E passed on this revision: protected startup passed three tests on each architecture, and both Hermes inference targets passed (eight test results total). Artifact receipts bind the exact candidate, trusted workflow, run, and cohort; startup image contracts and resource cleanup were verified. NVIDIA inference also passed after Discord-state rebuild.
  • Final helper CLI passed on Docker 28.0.4: actual export and restore entry points accepted their arguments and wrote usable containerimage.digest metadata. Empty-store restoration preserved config and all 105 layers. Helper bytes match 6d8ee971b; the image fixture remains historical 031fc79c5. Private daemons stopped and the host container inventory was unchanged.

Retained evidence on preceding commit 031fc79c5cbe8d81b610c29c331e223c61b40198:

  • CI passed. Managed-image qualification passed, including amd64, arm64, and rootless Podman. Hermes amd64 passed its one bounded retry after an intermittent exit 139; no assertion changed.
  • Full authorized local GPU E2E passed in 945.36 seconds: OpenClaw, Hermes, and Deep Agents Code each passed Ollama, vLLM, NIM, bootstrap rollback, and owned cleanup. All 37 shell results exited zero without timeout. Temporary credentials and task daemons, containers, namespace, and firewall rules were removed; original services remained running and GPU memory returned to zero. Retained 133-file evidence bundle SHA-256: bd4c9b0b8ffa2f9fba9742a3785539b82061e3fdce1ecaa62ffd647f8993309b.
  • CPU-to-GPU handoff passed after removing producer images, registry, and builder; config and all 105 layers matched. Archive SHA-256: fb0a64f13c66814d476cd640bd505350f511322b9c82bc78e4526c398d58fbca.
  • Focused trusted-main E2E: both Hermes inference protocols and arm64 startup passed. amd64 stopped at Docker 28 OCI export, motivating the current repair; downstream missing-contract output was a consequence. The complete failed-job log and downstream assertions were audited before publication.
  • Earlier validation included 188 image/HTTP tests and 89 shutdown-support tests. Four final shutdown regressions distinguish fixture signals from command timeouts and cover delayed shutdown, the final polling interval, and a surviving process.

The canonical-main trusted approval checker passed all gates: current checks, no unresolved major/critical CodeRabbit finding, no merge conflict, relevant test files, DCO, and all seven GitHub-verified commits. This is readiness evidence; no independent approval or merge is submitted.

These are focused PR checks and authorized local evidence, not full-release qualification. Historical results remain identified by commit. No secrets or credentials are added to the diff.

Review notes

CodeRabbit findings on missing export tags, legacy producers, body timeouts, final-interval shutdown checks, and fixture signal provenance were repaired. The latest completed review on 031fc79c5 had no remaining actionable findings: listener survival already has a real-listener regression, and the pgrep stub suggestion was advisory. Advisor runs 41238656784 and 41247981621 were collected in full, including all nine specialist findings and E2E receipts. The OCI byte/size finding is addressed by the streaming verification repair. The newer cleanup finding is inherited: the protected registry cleanup block is byte-identical to canonical base 82a1a8f9cb263b6fecdb508e407c5f84f72fd685; the existing offline builds already retain those images. It is left unchanged under the repository follow-up rule. Docker's loader independently checks ordered RootFS diffIDs before image creation; the repair adds the missing pre-load OCI blob proof. CodeRabbit remains automatically paused after its 031fc79c5 review, so no review of the new helper repair is claimed. Final Advisor run 41250724702 completed all nine specialists: seven clear and two findings; its aggregate gate is red. Dispositions: (1) a producer-signature requirement assumes replacement of the authenticated same-run artifact, beyond the documented trust of repository writers to populate caches. The workflow downloads the run/candidate-named artifact after successful CPU startup; Docker independently checks RootFS diffIDs before image creation. Self-consistency is not claimed as producer authentication. (2) the caller/CLI coverage concern is advisory: the real caller ran in the retained GPU qualification and is unchanged since 031fc79c5; the final helper also passed a new actual-CLI export/restore and metadata test on Docker 28. Both findings remain visible for independent maintainer assessment; no green Advisor result is claimed. The historical opening authoring-session report is preserved. No merge is requested.

Walkthrough

The changes add validated handoff and reuse of completed sandbox OpenClaw images in protected managed-image builds. Hermes probes now record HTTP status and retry selected transient responses. Ollama cleanup polls for daemon exit before checking the listener port.

Changes: Protected OpenClaw image handoff

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validate and export image handoffs
scripts/checks/protected-openclaw-image-handoff.mts, test/platform/images/protected-openclaw-image-handoff.test.ts
The script validates image identity, configuration, archive members, and OCI metadata. It exports a revision-tagged image and writes a receipt. Tests cover export and validation.
Restore and integrate image handoffs
scripts/checks/protected-openclaw-image-handoff.mts, scripts/checks/build-protected-managed-images.sh, test/platform/images/protected-openclaw-image-handoff.test.ts, test/platform/images/protected-managed-image-build-script.test.ts, test/e2e/README.md, .github/workflows/e2e.yaml
The restore path validates receipts and archives before publishing eligible images. The build script attempts eligible restores and exports completed sandbox images. Tests and documentation describe reuse and fallback build paths.

Explanation

The title "fix(e2e): classify HTTP failures and reuse protected OpenClaw images" matches the two main changes in the changeset. The HTTP side covers the Hermes probe classification changes in hermes-inference-switch-helpers.ts, the command-shape tests, and the retry documentation. The image side covers the protected OpenClaw image handoff script, the new export/restore module, and the build-script tests. The title omits the Ollama shutdown wait in gpu-e2e-helpers.ts. The objectives also mention that change, but it is a smaller part of the work, so the title does not need to name it. The title uses a conventional commit format and is specific.

Remove the redundant command-text assertions.

The HTTP server test above already proves that the generated command retains the body, reports status, and retries a 503 response. These assertions fail if an equivalent command uses different curl options, without identifying a behavior regression. Keep the executable test as the contract. As per path instructions, “Prefer observable outcomes through the public boundary over source-text, private-shape, or mock-call assertions.”

A cache without openclaw-runtime fails the GPU job instead of using the offline build.

The GPU job runs this script from the trusted workflow checkout. The CPU managed-image-multiarch-startup job runs the candidate's copy of the script. A candidate branch can predate this change while still declaring the v2 runtimeUser: "sandbox" activation. That candidate's CPU job does not create $cache_from/openclaw-runtime.

In that case, restoreOpenClawImage calls fs.lstatSync(directory), which throws ENOENT. Under set -e the build stops, and manual PR qualification fails for every such candidate.

The documented contract states that inputs without a handoff from the same attempt keep the offline OpenClaw build. An absent handoff should follow that path. Keep the existing fail-closed checks for a handoff directory that is present but invalid.

Create the revision tag from the verified digest before export.

The build pulls ${image_repository}@${digest}, but exportOpenClawImage requires the local revision tag for inspection and archive export. Create the tag from the immutable reference, then retain the existing identity check.

Before the identity check in the image export flow, ensure the revision tag from
imageTag(identity) exists by tagging the immutable reference when needed. Keep
the existing inspectImage identity comparison so exportOpenClawImage uses the
verified image.

Validate the pgrep match arguments.

The stub currently ignores "$*", so changing ollamaCleanupScript to use a non-matching process pattern would not fail these tests. Accept the production polling form and the -af diagnostic form, and reject other arguments.

Update the `pgrep` stub in the test setup to validate its arguments: accept the

Nitpick Cover the listener-survival branch with a test that keeps the port bound.

22-30: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Cover the listener-survival branch with a test that keeps the port bound.

Every cleanup test closes the fixture listener before ollamaCleanupScript runs. The /dev/tcp listener check in test/e2e/live/gpu-e2e-helpers.ts therefore never returns a bound port in these tests. Removing that check would not fail any test.

Add a case where the fixture keeps the reserved port bound while the owned daemon exits. Assert that the script exits 1 and that stderr contains Ollama cleanup left a listener on 127.0.0.1. This exercises the branch directly. It is a separate gap from the pgrep pattern coverage at line 307.

## Outcome

Ollama E2E cleanup reports the cleanup script's result without running
Bash login or logout hooks. A successful cleanup can otherwise return
exit code 1 with empty output when a logout hook fails.

## Reason

The cleanup helper used `bash -lc`, and its script explicitly calls
`exit 0`. With `set -e`, a failing logout command can replace that
success status. An isolated Linux fixture reproduces this with Ubuntu's
default logout file.

This is a companion repair for #12603 and follows #14041.
Protected-runtime E2E loads this helper from the trusted workflow
checkout, so a change only on the upgrade branch would not execute
there.

## Changes

- Run the shared Ollama cleanup script with Bash without login or logout
hooks.
- Extract the existing Ollama cleanup and environment code into one
helper. Use it for all three cleanup calls in GPU double-onboard.
- Preserve setup and disposal error handling. Reject process-termination
errors while accepting success and no-match statuses.
- Select all six catalogue targets that import either shared helper,
including llama.cpp and three OpenClaw inference targets. Add the
relocated helper to the copied-PR llama.cpp selector. Protected runtime
retains its native startup prerequisite.
- Cover logout hooks, service and process failures, caller error
handling, and workflow selection with isolated regressions.

The shared helper retains its service-stop operations, daemon and
listener checks, polling limits, and 30-second command budget. GPU
double-onboard now uses these checks. Its post-install cleanup budget
decreases from 60 seconds to 30 seconds.

## Verification

Current commit: `bcf2bf3fab3170caee51a8e27851efdc857916e2`.

- Two selector support suites — 220 tests passed. Three selector
regressions failed before the repair and passed afterward.
- Independent correctness, writing, and security review — passed for all
13 changed files, with prior review evidence retained for unchanged
files.
- Normal pre-commit, commit-msg, and isolated pre-push hooks — passed.
All three PR commits are Verified on GitHub.
- New candidate CI, automated review, and self-hosted qualification are
pending. No live protected-runtime pass is claimed.

Previous commit `f1e667b0`:

- Four focused E2E support suites — 205 tests passed. Risk-plan suite —
193 tests passed.
- Four process-termination regressions failed before the repair and
passed afterward.
- Code CI and self-hosted qualification passed. Advisor found two
selector omissions; this commit repairs both and three sibling
omissions.
- Hosted growth check — all seven tests passed. The [maintainer
approval](#14062 (comment))
covers one helper file, three existing port-validation guards reached by
double-onboard, and one shared shell probe. This selector repair adds no
assertion-budget exception.

Initial repair evidence:

- `npx vitest run --project e2e-support
test/e2e/support/gpu-ollama-cleanup.test.ts
test/e2e/support/gpu-e2e-helpers.test.ts` — 56 tests passed against the
main-based repair.
- Before the repair, the new success regression returned 1 instead of 0.
The service-failure regression retained status 17.
- Linux Bash 5.1.16 fixture with Ubuntu's logout file — login mode
returned 1 with empty output; non-login mode returned 0. Service and
process commands were inert stubs.
- `git diff --check` — passed.
- Reviewed diff contains no secrets, API keys, or credentials.

## Review notes

Independent review covers all 13 changed files at the current commit.
This changes internal E2E execution only; no public documentation update
is required.

The defect is consistent with the empty-output cleanup failure in main
run 41316225455. That runner's logout file was not retained, so this PR
does not claim its historical cause is proven. No live protected-runtime
pass or full cleanup qualification is claimed.

## Documentation Writer Review

- Result: `no-docs-needed`
- Evidence: Internal E2E cleanup and target selection changes; no public
command, configuration, or supported product behavior changes. Final
review covers commit `bcf2bf3fab`.

## Summary by CodeRabbit

* **Bug Fixes**
* Ollama cleanup no longer runs login-shell logout hooks, and cleanup
exit statuses are preserved.
* GPU setup now uses consistent Ollama cleanup before and after setup.
Cleanup waits for lingering processes and reports unsuccessful cleanup,
helping GPU tests complete more reliably.
* **Tests**
* Expanded automated coverage for cleanup outcomes, GPU setup cleanup,
and workflow selection when shared GPU test helpers change.
