Overview

Add optional managed Hermes API and dashboard interfaces alongside the existing embedded SDK agent in one NeMo Fabric runtime. Each path retains its own conversations and native agent instances. The existing SDK invocation, streaming, normalized results, and warm-session behavior remain supported; native API responses remain native.

This PR is independent of #573: no OpenClaw adapter, test, documentation, or catalog changes remain in the final diff. Native TUI is proposed and is not implemented here. No public SDK or adapter-contract changes are introduced.

Details

  • Mark the interfaces example as a work in progress, with its structure and user experience to be reworked as part of OpenClaw TUI support.
  • Explicitly disable other known gateway platforms and profile multiplexing for the managed API runtime. Inherited Telegram/webhook settings cannot start unrelated messaging adapters or their dependency installers. Keep the embedded SDK path unchanged and print example startup/request progress.
  • Allow HERMES_AGENT_CHECKOUT to select a separate pinned checkout during installation, preserving modified external/hermes-agent work; document the optional override in the installation guide.
  • Start optional API/dashboard children on exact loopback ports, check startup readiness within the configured budget, and stop their process groups with bounded gateway draining.
  • Apply normalized behavioral configuration to managed native agents through a private snapshot and an adapter-owned launcher; retain native routing and session identity without editing Hermes source. Explicit tool selection and nonempty exclusions override native defaults; unspecified policies retain native interface defaults. The embedded SDK tool defaults are unchanged.
  • Isolate the native no-URL OpenAI route from inherited OPENAI_BASE_URL. Explicit endpoints use generated native routing.
  • Continue stopping children when token or configuration-snapshot removal fails, log the error, and retain paths for a later cleanup retry.
  • Finalize and flush Relay segments per native API turn, producing ATIF without deleting conversation state or firing unrelated session-end hooks.
  • Add the portable examples/interfaces/hermes.py file-task example, output and ATOF/ATIF checks, editable diagram/PNG, and a separate native interfaces guide.

Limitations and Planned Work

The guide records deferred runtime-wide native health/activity aggregation and run/session discovery, listener ownership checks, stronger descendant cleanup under denied group signals, gateway replacement ownership/configuration, browser and interactive approval qualification, native TUI, and session-scoped artifact collection. Cross-runtime resume and SDK/native conversation handoff remain deferred. There is no automatic interface restart or normalized native RunResult/complete usage accounting. Cleanup permission failures can leave private files on disk despite child shutdown.

No-URL OpenAI coverage verifies child environment construction with a mocked embedded constructor; it does not qualify provider login or a live OpenAI request. Live model tests use an explicit OpenAI-compatible endpoint. Browser/TUI/restart/resume behavior is not qualified by the API tests.

Validation

Final merge gate at 3ca1de8a: the native API example was rerun end to end against the hosted Nemotron endpoint and all six checks passed. Latest-head CI completed with 38 successful checks and 3 skipped, zero pending or failed. Merged as e43ac067a2b1fded0ab92ac1014202b793016ac6 after the maintainer authorized merging on these conditions.

Runtime-code validation at 1907d1f6: CI: 38 successful checks, 3 skipped, zero pending or failed. This includes all Python versions/operating systems, the four Relay CLI versions, pinned Hermes, Rust, Node/adapters, deterministic OpenCode/Cline/Qwen E2E, pre-commit, and all four platform wheel builds/license checks. All review threads were resolved before merge.

  • 153 Hermes adapter/E2E tests passed in the installed .venv-hermes, including existing SDK invocation/streaming, warm sessions, health, normalized results, Relay artifacts, native config/authentication/readiness/cleanup, native history/ATIF segmentation, and inherited messaging-platform isolation.
  • The exact manual file-task example completed against the user-provided Nemotron endpoint in about 10 seconds. A second live run with dummy inherited Telegram/webhook settings completed in about 13 seconds. Both passed all six output/ATOF/ATIF/token-cleanup checks and attempted no messaging dependency installation. Earlier sanitized request capture also verified instructions, model/credential, generation settings, and four file tools across one embedded SDK turn and two fresh native API conversations.
  • Full local Python validation used a separate locked CI dependency environment and collected 3,501 tests: 3,252 passed and 159 skipped initially, with one Claude failure due to inherited provider variables and 89 Harbor fixture errors due to ignored vendored files in the working sample task. Clean isolated retries passed all 3 Claude checks and all 118 Harbor qualification tests, covering every failure/error. No unrelated adapter code or user build artifacts were changed. The complete remote Python matrix passed in clean CI checkouts.
  • The actual installer completed with HERMES_AGENT_CHECKOUT selecting a clean pinned checkout while preserving the modified default checkout. The documented example also passed all six checks in the newly installed environment (Python 3.14.5, Relay 0.10.0).
  • Local pre-commit checks over every PR file passed. Ruff formatting/lint and git diff --check passed. Fern configuration reports zero errors and 12 existing warnings; strict documentation links passed.

The guide links to examples/interfaces/README.md for the manual workflow and artifact inspection. Browser/TUI, approvals, independent gateway replacement, resume/handoff, and complete native result/artifact normalization remain outside these qualification claims.

Where should the reviewer start?

Start with examples/interfaces/README.md and docs/integrations/harness/hermes-interfaces.mdx, especially configuration precedence and limitations. Then review native.py, interfaces.py, the native-only branch of HermesRuntime.start, and telemetry.finalize_native_relay_segment. The added regressions are in test_hermes_native_config.py and test_hermes_interfaces.py.

Review the final Files changed diff against main; inherited OpenClaw commits remain in history followed by the scope-cleanup commit. The maintainer authorized merge after end-to-end testing and green CI.

OpenShell's sandbox denies signals to a process group with EPERM. The
OpenClaw adapter let that error escape its stop and left the Gateway
running until the sandbox went away, and the ACP runner left the agent
process running the same way.

Both now signal the child itself when the group signal is denied. The
Python adapters share `common.utils.signal_process_group` for this.

Not covered here: the Codex adapter's SIGKILL of its app server, which
has the same pattern.

On busy hosts, such as CI runners starting three agents at once on four
vCPUs, the Gateway took close to 40 s to become ready. Each startup step
had its own 30 s timeout, so start failed at random and could also run
past NeMo Fabric's 90 s start limit.

`startup_timeout_seconds` now bounds all of start, from checking the
`openclaw` command to the Gateway becoming ready, with a 60 s default.
The descriptor caps it at 75 s so start stays within Fabric's limit.

OpenClaw 2026.9.34 also starts a background lookup of catalog.openclaw.ai
once the Gateway is ready. The adapter already turns off update checks
and telemetry, and now sets `models.catalogRefresh.enabled` to false too.

OpenClaw's Control UI is its browser dashboard and chat. With
`harness.settings.interfaces.dashboard.port`, a managed runtime runs the
Gateway on that exact loopback port with the Control UI on, accepting
the loopback origins for it. After the Gateway starts, the adapter
writes the per-start sign-in token to
`<artifact root>/.fabric/openclaw/runtimes/<runtime-id>/interfaces/dashboard.token`
with mode 0600, and `stop` removes it. Prepared and attached services
reject interfaces.

The descriptor's schema validates the settings, including that a
dashboard port can't be combined with `port_range`; the adapter doesn't
repeat those checks. The atomic owner-only file write that the service
connection file already used moves to `common.local_interfaces` so the
token file can share it.

Left for later: extra browser origins beyond loopback, and checking on
Linux that the Gateway itself owns the port.

With `harness.settings.interfaces.api` or `.dashboard`, a runtime starts
Hermes's gateway, with only its API server, or its dashboard, as child
processes on exact loopback ports, alongside the embedded agent and on
the same Hermes home. Start waits for each child's health check within
`startup_timeout_seconds` (60 s by default, at most 75 s). Then the
adapter writes the API server's per-start bearer token to
`<artifact root>/.fabric/hermes/runtimes/<runtime-id>/interfaces/api.token`
with mode 0600. `stop` removes the token and stops each child's process
group, signalling the child itself where group signals are denied.

With interfaces on, `config.yaml` names the model's endpoint as Hermes's
`custom` provider, with the key as a reference to `api_key_env`, so the
children call the configured endpoint. The gateway drains in-flight runs
for 3 s so it exits within the stop grace. The API server needs
`aiohttp`, so `install-hermes-agent` installs it from Hermes's
`messaging` extra without the platform SDKs.

The descriptor's schema validates the settings; the adapter doesn't
repeat those checks. OpenClaw's loopback port check moves to
`common.local_interfaces` so both adapters use it. The two descriptor
copies and the catalog are mechanical.

Left for later: checking on Linux that each child itself owns its port.

Test native Control UI sign-in.

This test confirms generated configuration, but the mock Gateway cannot verify that the token authenticates a browser WebSocket connection. Add a test against the supported OpenClaw release that loads the UI and signs in with the runtime token. Keep the existing permission and cleanup assertions. As per path instructions, “Tests should cover the behavior promised by the changed API surface, including error paths, lifecycle cleanup, and SDK/native parity where relevant.”

tests/adapters/test_openclaw.py:1390-1426
Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Add a test for token cleanup after a post-token startup failure.

The dashboard token is written before the client and monitor task are created. The except BaseException block then calls stop(), which removes the token. No inspected test forces a failure at that point, so a regression that breaks this cleanup would not be caught. The timeout-validation tests do not cover it either, because they exercise _positive_setting and the pre-token path.

The test can make _read_timeout fail. That call runs only after the token is written. The test should also confirm that the token existed when the failure occurred.

On Windows, SO_REUSEADDR lets a bind succeed on a port that another
socket holds, so port_available could report a busy port as free and
Hermes and OpenClaw would skip their port-in-use errors. Use
SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE where the platform has it.

- startup_timeout_seconds now counts from the start of the runtime's
start, not from the launch of the interface children, so Hermes's own
setup can't push start past NeMo Fabric's 90-second limit.
- stop sends SIGKILL to the children even when it's cancelled while it
waits for them, so a child that ignores SIGTERM can't keep its port.
- The docs say that the gateway also starts other Hermes platforms that
its inherited environment configures, such as Telegram.
- Tests cover a start that times out after launching a child, a
disabled interface, and a cancelled stop. The in-flight request test
bounds its wait, and the mock model server reads its scenario before
  the configured delay.

OpenClaw allocates browser CDP ports through port + 110 on demand; it
doesn't reserve them. The dashboard port description now says to keep
that range free.

The token file is owner-only only on POSIX hosts. On Windows, chmod sets
only the read-only flag, so the file inherits the artifact root's
permissions. The guide now says so.

…led starts

A dashboard with enabled false serves no Control UI and writes no token.
A start that fails after writing the token removes it, and a start that
times out with a dashboard configured leaves no artifacts.

121-123: Stability & Availability

Do not change the exited-leader filter.

Hermes starts both foreground and background terminal commands with start_new_session=True. Their descendants therefore do not remain in the gateway's process group. Skipping an exited gateway leader cannot leave those terminal subprocesses running through this process-group signal.

cv added 4 commits November 1, 2026 17:25
Where group signals are denied, stop falls back to signaling the child's
own PID. Once the child is reaped, that PID can belong to another
process. The ACP runner now skips the fallback after the agent exits,
and OpenClaw rechecks the Gateway's return code before it escalates to
SIGKILL.

The tests now cover an agent that ignores SIGTERM, a Gateway that needs
SIGKILL, and signal forwarding, each where group signals are denied.

The readiness loop checked the deadline only between requests, and each
/startupz request could wait up to 1 second per phase. A request that
began just before the deadline could run past it. Each request is now
bounded by the time left.

The guide's example sets startup_timeout_seconds without saying what it
covers or that the descriptor caps it at 75 seconds.

Major · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Schedule all enabled health checks under the shared deadline.

The current loop waits for each child in sequence. If the first wait uses the remaining startup interval, the second _wait_healthy call can report hermes_interface_start_timeout even when the second child became healthy before the shared deadline. The startup error then stops both children. Schedule the waits together and drain them on failure so the existing cleanup path remains deterministic.

adapters/python/hermes/src/nemo_fabric_adapters/hermes/interfaces.py:73-83
Major · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Reject enabled Hermes interfaces on Windows before any child starts.

On Windows, InterfaceChildren.start can spawn interface children. start_new_session=True is ignored there, so the spawn succeeds. Shutdown then calls signal_process_group, which calls os.killpg. That API is Unix-only, so the call raises AttributeError, and the helper does not catch it. The finally block in stop() then evaluates signal.SIGKILL, which also fails on Windows. The block exits before it signals the children or clears self._children. The children keep running. A failed startup can also replace its original error with AttributeError.

Reject the Windows case at the start of start(). Nothing has spawned at that point, so the adapter's cleanup path reaches stop() with no children and makes no signal calls.

Major · Security & Privacy · Heavy lift

OpenClaw readiness accepts any HTTP 200 listener and sends the bearer token before checking that the Gateway owns the port.

_wait_started sends Authorization: Bearer <token> to 127.0.0.1:{port}/startupz and returns on any 200. The port preflight runs before openclaw config validate and before create_subprocess_exec. A local process that binds the port in that window can answer readiness and receive the token. The child-exit check catches only a Gateway that exits before the rogue listener answers.

The fixed dashboard.port path and the random _select_port path share this readiness logic. A fixed port makes the target known in advance, but both modes need the same correction. The fix belongs in the OpenClaw startup flow, in _wait_started and the post-readiness steps. A Hermes-only ownership check does not cover it.

The PR defers Linux child-port ownership checks. This flow still needs that check before readiness can establish ownership.

establish that the launched Gateway child owns the port before sending the token

Failed pre-merge checks:
- Linked Issues check:
1. Change `InterfaceChildren.start` to launch all enabled children first, then
run health checks concurrently (for example with `asyncio.gather`) against the
same absolute deadline. Keep stop-on-failure cleanup.
2. Add a port-ownership check for each child before writing `api.token`, as #540
requires. Linux child-port ownership is the item the PR description defers.
Either implement it or obtain a maintainer decision that removes this
requirement from #540 and records that decision in the PR.
3. Add a post-health port check before
`local_interfaces.write_private_file(token_path, token)`.
4. Add tests for concurrent startup under one deadline, and for a healthy
response from a process that does not own the configured port.

- Out of Scope Changes check:
Remove the OpenClaw dashboard feature and its schema, catalog, documentation,
adapter, and test changes from this PR. Move them to a separately scoped pull
request. Keep the shared `local_interfaces` helpers only where the Hermes
implementation uses them. If the OpenClaw port-check move is kept, limit it to
that refactor and show that it does not depend on the OpenClaw dashboard
feature. Confirm that no TypeScript ACP process-signal changes remain at the
reviewed head, or remove them.

- Docstring Coverage:
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage
threshold.

Document crash leftovers and recovery steps.

The guide documents cleanup after ordinary stop only. An abrupt termination can bypass HermesAdapter.stop(), leaving api.token and interface processes behind. Document how operators identify and remove these leftovers before restarting.

ordinary stop cleanup ran.

Trivial · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Enforce the configured drain window in the shutdown test.

The test currently cancels the request without observing its result and checks only an upper bound. Add a lower-bound assertion tied to interfaces.GATEWAY_DRAIN_TIMEOUT_SECONDS so immediate request interruption does not pass.

Suggested fix

     started = time.monotonic()
     await runtime.stop()
     elapsed = time.monotonic() - started
     in_flight.cancel()

+    assert elapsed >= interfaces.GATEWAY_DRAIN_TIMEOUT_SECONDS - 0.5
     assert elapsed < 8
     assert not _token_path(tmp_path).exists()

Update `InterfaceChildren.start` to start and health-check enabled children
concurrently under one absolute deadline. Add a post-health port-ownership check
for every enabled child before writing `api.token`. Add tests for concurrent
startup and for a healthy listener that is not owned by the started child.

- Docstring Coverage:
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage

Add a post-health ownership check for each enabled child before
`write_private_file(token_path, token)`. The check must confirm that the process
listening on the child's loopback port belongs to the started child's process
group or PID. Fail with a `LifecycleError` when ownership differs. Add tests for
a healthy listener that the started child does not own, and confirm that no
token file is written in that case. Alternatively, obtain a maintainer decision
that removes port ownership from #540 scope. Confirm that
`docs/integrations/harness/hermes.mdx` documents the three #540 limitations
listed in the issue.

142-144: token_path.unlink(missing_ok=True) still runs before the try/finally that signals the child process groups. An OSError other than FileNotFoundError leaves stop() before any SIGTERM or SIGKILL. The earlier review comment on this line range already covers the problem.

adapters/python/hermes/src/nemo_fabric_adapters/hermes/adapter.py: 2

214-221: environment = dict(os.environ) still passes an inherited OPENAI_BASE_URL to the children, together with the injected OPENAI_API_KEY. An earlier review comment already covers the unset-base_url OpenAI case.
