docs(designs): propose ADR-061 cloud-independent host diagnostics - #1957

Conversation
Propose an opt-in host-diagnostics step for log-collector that runs on any cluster, not only GCP and AWS: auto-detect supportconfig or sos, default to a minimal profile that fits the existing 10-minute Job timeout (17 s measured, against 598 s for a default supportconfig run), and optionally collect a rate-limited Rancher support bundle for the Kubernetes side. 51-51: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winDefine the host-diagnostics order relative to the cloud collectors.
Line 51 places the step after
nvidia-bug-reportbut does not place it relative to the GCP and AWS branches. Line 59 requires skipping host diagnostics when either branch produced a report, but does not define the ordering or the state used for that check. State that the cloud collectors run first, or define an explicit guard that prevents duplicate reports.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

Review comment at @docs/designs/061-host-diagnostics-collection.md at line 51: Clarify the host-diagnostics ordering in the design around the `nvidia-bug-report` step: specify that the GCP and AWS collectors run first and host diagnostics run only if neither produced a report, or define an explicit guard that enforces this behavior.
60-60: 🔒 Security & Privacy | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winDefine Secret handling for the Rancher support bundle.
The proposal grants the dedicated ServiceAccount “read-only cluster access,” collects Kubernetes objects, and uploads the archive. Read-only access can still include
get, list, orwatchon Secrets, which exposes Secret data. Define least-privilege RBAC that denies Secret access, and configure or document support-bundle-kit filters that exclude or redact Secret data before upload.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

- Line 60: Update the Rancher support bundle design around minInterval to
specify a cluster-scoped coordinator, such as a lease or lock, that atomically
grants one log-collector Job ownership to create a bundle and enforce the rate
limit across nodes.
- Line 84: Update the host diagnostics design around `supportconfig -j` and
`extraArgs` to specify the `supportutils-scrub` 1.2-or-later prerequisite and
define the missing-package behavior; ensure a requested scrub is neither
reported as successful nor uploaded as scrubbed when that prerequisite is
unavailable.
- Line 34: Split the combined decision in the host-diagnostics ADR into two
separate ADRs: one for opt-in host diagnostics in log-collector and one for
opt-in, rate-limited Rancher support-bundle collection. Update the ADR records
and their index entries in docs/designs/README.md so each record states only one
decision, preserving the stated defaults and existing GCP/AWS SOS behavior.

since this has a container image would this be a side car container or would this be more of running the image on the host itself?

Neither, for the host report. The step runs the host's own supportconfig/sos binaries through log-collector's existing chroot /host. Those tools ship with the distribution (SLES 16 installs both), so NVSentinel needs no image or sidecar, and the step is skipped if neither tool is installed. 98c9ce3 states this explicitly.
The image on this line was for the Rancher support bundle. To keep this ADR to one decision, I moved that to future work. Noted there for a future ADR: it would be its own short-lived pod that collects through the Kubernetes API, not a sidecar and not on the host.

Address review feedback: keep one decision per record by moving Rancher support bundle collection to future work, state that the step runs the host's own diagnostic tool through chroot with no image or sidecar, and add a scrub setting that fails closed when supportutils-scrub is unavailable. Summary
Proposes ADR-061 for #1955: an opt-in, cloud-independent host-diagnostics step in log-collector. Following AGENTS.md, this PR adds the decision record only. Implementation waits for maintainer acceptance.
Host diagnostics: auto-detect
supportconfigorsos, and run outside the GCP/AWS branches, whose behaviour is unchanged. The defaultminimalprofile fits the existing 10-minute Job timeout;fullis opt-in. Measured on an idle SLES 16 node:supportconfigrun-m -k -c -q(minimal)-k -c, tracedRancher support bundle: optional and rate-limited, modelled on GPU Operator must-gather, for the Kubernetes objects and logs host reports don't include.
Open question for maintainers: auto-raise
logCollector.timeoutforprofile: full, or document it?ADR-059 and ADR-060 appear in open PRs (#1706, #1952), so this takes 061. Happy to renumber.
