Description

Fix IORails streaming tool calls arriving as JSON text in delta.content. Emit ToolCallChunk after validation so the server produces structured delta.tool_calls with finish_reason: "tool_calls". Preserve trace capture and update streaming documentation.

The nonstandard IORails JSON-string payload originated in #2024. #2278 removed JSON-string passthrough without migrating IORails to typed events, causing that payload to appear in delta.content.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Tool calls in IORails streaming responses are now delivered as structured events with parsed arguments, following any content chunks.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Tool-call checks can prevent blocked or truncated calls from appearing in the stream.
  • Documentation
    • Updated streaming guidance to describe structured tool-call events and when they are released.

[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no actionable issues remain from this review.

Summary

IORails now emits completed ToolCallChunk events instead of tool-call JSON in text chunks.

  • IORails streams completed tool calls as structured events.

Changes since the previous review only update documentation. No actionable issues were found in those changes or in the full-PR rule check.

Walkthrough

IORails now yields completed tool calls as structured ToolCallChunk events after configured checks allow them. Content capture continues to record calls in OpenAI-compatible JSON form. Streaming tests and documentation reflect the event format.

Changes: IORails streaming tool-call events

stream_async now yields completed tool calls as ToolCallChunk events. Content capture retains the OpenAI-compatible JSON representation. The documentation describes the event and its release after tool-call checks allow it.

Possibly related issues

  • NVIDIA-NeMo/Guardrails issue 2497: Covers IORails streaming and checked terminal tool-call output. This change updates the streaming output format but does not implement tool-call rewriting.

Possibly related PRs

  • NVIDIA-NeMo/Guardrails#2278: This change replaces the IORails JSON-string path with ToolCallChunk events, continuing work on streamed tool-call output.
  • NVIDIA-NeMo/Guardrails#2507: Both changes address streamed tool-call delivery through the server and edit the streaming documentation.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 53.85% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 13 functions across 4 files. Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Full details: Test Results For Major Changes

Explanation

The PR makes a major public behavior change. IORails.stream_async now returns ToolCallChunk events instead of JSON-string or metadata-wrapped tool-call frames, and its public return annotation changed. The PR description explains the change but includes no test command, test result, or other testing information. Modified test files do not document test results in the PR description.

Resolution

Add a testing section to the PR description. List the exact commands used and their results, including the relevant IORails streaming and tool-rail tests. State any tests that were not run and why.

Looks good! Here are a few high level comments:

  1. This is a breaking change, could you add a ! to the Pr description? Prior to the PR the last chunk was a string you could load as JSON. Now it's a ToolCallChunk which needs consumers to update their code accordingly.
  2. Can you update the generation-options.mdx doc "The bare-message and streaming paths on IORails also use the OpenAI wire shape" to reflect the changes.
