Is async working method possible?

Hello, when run some sql to a large table, it take some time to finish, during this process, emacs blocking.

repl mode does not help.

Is there a plan to add async working method?

Thanks for the report. For now, I do not plan to make foreground query execution asynchronous.

JDBC-backed connections could support this in the future because Clutch already uses a sidecar with async RPC plumbing. Native backends are different: PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, and Redis would need their underlying Elisp protocol clients to expose real async/nonblocking query APIs, or Clutch would need a separate worker/agent design. SQLite would also need a worker to avoid blocking Emacs.

I do not want to fake async with timers or private driver internals. The current synchronous execution model is simpler and safer to reason about for transactions, connection busy state, cancellation, result ownership, and sequential multi-statement execution, so I will treat this as a possible future design topic rather than a planned near-term change.

Thank you, the easiest way to do this, is use a external shell or term and execute client command manually, o connect to database, then execute sql. Before this package support async, i will use in this way.

Clutch 0.5.2, released today, runs statements without blocking Emacs on PostgreSQL, MySQL and JDBC connections. As discussed above, this uses real non-blocking APIs rather than timers: pgsql.el 0.2.0 adds pgsql-exec-async, mysql.el adds mysql-query-async, and JDBC uses the agent's asynchronous RPC.

• While a statement runs, the console, REPL and result buffers stay usable. The statement's first line shows a fringe marker, and the mode line counts the elapsed time.
• C-g in those buffers cancels the running statement and reports the server's verdict. A second C-g quits as usual.
• Statements no longer stop after 30 seconds by default. Set clutch-query-timeout-seconds if you want a limit.

Requirements: pgsql.el 0.2.0 for PostgreSQL, a current mysql.el for MySQL, and clutch-jdbc-agent 0.2.26 for JDBC, which Clutch downloads through clutch-jdbc-ensure-agent. MongoDB, Redis and SQLite still block for now, and JDBC still fetches the rest of a result page synchronously once the statement has finished.
