Software engineer in Copenhagen, originally from Porto. Frontend first, with a working backend range in Java and Spring.
- Production web applications in React, Next.js and TypeScript, six-plus years of them.
- Design systems and component libraries.
- Backend, more recently: Java, Spring Boot and Kafka on a real-time risk pipeline.
- Testing as a habit rather than a phase: Jest, React Testing Library, Cypress, Playwright, JUnit. I have guest-lectured on frontend testing.
- AI in the workflow without lowering the bar. I led AI tooling adoption for my team. An agent can draft, but it is still my name on the pull request.
Most of my recent work sits in private repos while I move it into shape. Two projects are on their way out this autumn: an A320 hydraulics page for the browser, with a canvas simulation driven by system state, and an expense tracker rewritten in Java and Spring. Open source: small contributions to the FlyByWire A32NX installer frontend.
I publish first on joaooliveira.eu, mirrored on Medium. Latest: We Must Defibrillate the Frontier, on what the September "pace the frontier" call looks like next to the industry's own numbers.

Before software: volunteer firefighter and EMT, then a craft brewery I founded.
