Rapid²

AI rapid-prototyping scaffold connected to Nvidia Omniverse / Isaac Sim — Festo internal platform for accelerating AI development cycles.

What is Rapid²?

Rapid² is Festo's internal AI rapid-prototyping platform that enables engineering teams to move from concept to validated prototype in days rather than weeks. It provides a structured scaffold for building, simulating, and evaluating AI-driven industrial applications — with a direct pipeline into Nvidia Omniverse and Isaac Sim for physics-accurate digital-twin simulation.

Tech Stack

  • Python 3.11 — core orchestration and AI pipeline
  • Nvidia Omniverse — collaborative 3D simulation platform
  • Nvidia Isaac Sim — robotics simulation for training and evaluation
  • USD (Universal Scene Description) — scene interchange format
  • Reinforcement Learning — policy training in simulation before real-world deployment

Purpose

In industrial AI, the gap between a promising idea and a deployable prototype is often dominated by environment setup, simulation configuration, and integration overhead. Rapid² eliminates this friction by providing:

  • Pre-configured simulation environments for common Festo actuator and robot setups
  • Standardised interfaces between AI models and Omniverse/Isaac Sim scenes
  • Automated benchmarking and evaluation pipelines
  • Reproducible experiment tracking

Outcomes

  • Used internally at Festo to accelerate AI development across multiple product lines
  • Reduced time-to-first-prototype for new AI applications
  • Enabled rapid evaluation of reinforcement learning policies in physics-accurate simulation before hardware deployment

Context

Rapid² is part of Festo's broader AI and autonomous systems initiative, led by the Advanced Development Analytics & Control team. It complements projects like GripperAI (RL-based robotic picking) and the Festo–Nvidia Isaac Sim integration for human-robot collaboration.

Note: This is a public-facing overview of an internal Festo platform. Source code is not included in this repository.
