E Ink Studio

A single-file, offline web tool that turns text and photos into high-contrast grayscale wallpapers sized exactly for e-ink devices. Built for the XTEink X3 pocket reader, with presets for most popular e-readers and tablets.

Live: https://greatsyxsuke.github.io/E-Ink-Studio/

Everything runs in one index.html — no build step, no dependencies, no network. Open it in any browser and it works offline.

Features

Device presets

Pick your device and the canvas is sized to its native resolution:

  • XTEink X3 (528×792), X4 Pro (480×800), X4 Classic (480×800)
  • reMarkable 2 / Paper Pro, Kindle Paperwhite 11th, Oasis, Scribe
  • Kobo Clara 2E, Libra 2 — Boox Note Air / Tab — Supernote A5 X
  • Phone lock screen (grayscale), Square 1:1, and a Custom size

Toggle portrait / landscape on any preset.

Text wallpapers

  • Eight layout templates: Quote, Date, Agenda, Habits, Reading, Week, Sign-out, Stamp
  • Insert example (🎲) drops in a random starter matched to the current template — quotes, goofy to-do lists, joke habit grids, a book with progress, a week of plans, a silly sign-out card, or a librarian stamp
  • Surprise me shuffles the whole look (font, theme, size, position)
  • Built-in fonts plus custom font upload (any .ttf/.otf/.woff)
  • Control style, size, alignment, vertical position, and margin

Template tokens

Resolved live from the device clock when you generate the image:

Token Example
{date} October 25, 2026
{shortdate} 10/25/2026
{weekday} Sunday
{day} {month} {monthnum} {year} 25 · October · 10 · 2026
{time} {time24} 10:48 PM · 22:48
{weeknum} {dayofyear} 43 · 298
{moonphase} e.g. Waxing Gibbous

Layout syntax

  • Agenda — one to-do per line. Start a line with [x] to show it checked and struck through; empty slots become ruled lines.
  • Habits — one habit per line, current week + today highlighted. Add ticks after a | — e.g. Floss | x x . x . . . (x = done).
  • Reading — line 1 = title, line 2 = author. Add a line like 142/320 (or 44%) to fill a circular progress ring showing the percentage and page count.
  • Week — a 7-day week (Mon–Sun) with today highlighted. Add notes with Mon: Dentist 3pm for any day.
  • Sign-out — a library-style sign-out card (or any sign-out sheet), with stamped-looking dates, italic "handwritten" names, and a punch hole.
    • Line 1 = title, line 2 = author. Or set your own header fields with Label: value — e.g. Item: Office Stapler, Call No: 823.912 TOL (up to three).
    • Rows: Oct 3 | Gandalf the Grey. Add a third value (| Late) to get a Returned column.
    • Rename the columns with # Date | Borrowed By | Excuse.
    • The Attribution field becomes the small line at the bottom of the card (defaults to "Please do not remove card from pocket").
  • Stamp — one big librarian-style ink stamp. Each line of the main text is a line of the stamp; the Attribution field is the date line (tokens like {shortdate} work).
The Hobbit
J.R.R. Tolkien
Oct 3 | Gandalf the Grey | Late
Oct 17 | Smaug | Scorched

Ink stamp

Use it as the standalone Stamp layout, or switch on Stamp over the current layout to slam a stamp onto any other template ("OVERDUE" across a sign-out card, "RETURNED" over a quote).

  • Words for the overlay have their own field, so the layout underneath keeps its text. Use / for a second line, e.g. DO NOT / DISTURB.
  • Date line (optional), with token support.
  • Shape: Box (double border, condensed caps, date under a rule) or Round (words along the top and bottom of the ring, stars between, date in the center).
  • Placement for the overlay: top, center, or bottom.
  • Ink wear adds speckles, dry streaks, and uneven pressure so it looks hand-stamped.
  • Re-stamp gives a new tilt and ink pattern. The pattern stays put while you type, and saved looks remember it.

Finish

  • Light or dark theme
  • Accent rule and hairline border
  • Extras: auto text color, lock-screen safe-zone guide, paper grain

QR codes

Drop in a URL and place a self-contained QR code in any corner. It always sits on a white patch so it scans on either theme.

Photos

Load a JPG/PNG/WebP and it's converted to grayscale and sized to the preset.

  • Look: Greyscale, 16-level, Floyd, Atkinson, Bayer, Halftone, Two-tone
  • Fade to keep overlaid text legible
  • Position & crop: zoom and pan
  • Adjust tone: brightness, contrast, sharpen
  • Effects: threshold, vignette, rounded corners

E-ink render & preview

Optionally quantize the whole composition to the panel's depth (1-bit Floyd / Atkinson / Bayer, or 16-level grey) so the preview matches the device and the panel won't re-dither it.

Turn on Compare smooth vs e-ink to split the preview side by side — the smooth composite next to what the panel will actually show — so you can judge grain before exporting.

Export

  • PNG — for sharing, phone lock screens, and Kobo screensavers
  • 24-bit BMP — the format the XTEink readers accept for custom wallpapers
  • Transparent overlay (PNG or 32-bit BMP) — saves only your text, stamp, and artwork with no paper behind it, so readers with a transparent sleep mode show it over the page you were reading. The preview shows a grey sample page underneath (it's never exported), and files are named …-overlay.
  • Per-device defaults — picking an XTEink preset defaults to BMP, Kobo defaults to PNG, each with a short install hint. A transparent choice is kept when you switch devices.
  • Exports are rendered at 2× and downscaled for crisper text and edges, then dithered at true panel resolution (1-bit photo looks render at native size to stay sharp). With E-ink render on, overlay edges snap to fully clear or fully inked, so there are no grey halos.
  • Copy image to clipboard for quick pasting, alongside Download and Open-in-new-tab

Save & reuse

  • Saved looks persist in your browser, plus a copyable settings code to move a look between devices
  • Save this app exports a standalone copy of the tool itself
  • Add to Home Screen on iOS/Android for an app-like launch

Using it on your device

XTEink (X3 / X4):

  1. Open the live link in Safari (not the Files app preview — that won't run the tool).
  2. Build your wallpaper and export as 24-bit BMP.
  3. Copy it to the reader and set it as your custom sleep/wallpaper image.

XTEink transparent overlay (tested on the Licorice firmware):

  1. Build something light: a stamp, a short quote, or a sign-out card. Use the light theme (dark text). Photos cover the page underneath.
  2. Export as PNG · transparent overlay (the 32-bit BMP overlay works too).
  3. Copy it to the reader and select it with the firmware's transparent sleep screen option.

Kobo (Libra 2, etc.):

  1. Build your wallpaper and export as PNG.
  2. Connect by USB and drop it in the .kobo/screensaver folder (create it if it doesn't exist).
  3. In settings, turn on Show current read and Show book covers full screen.

If a photo looks grainy on-device, start from a higher-resolution source and try the 16-level look or turn on E-ink render. Use Compare smooth vs e-ink to preview the result first.

Tokens like {moonphase} and {weeknum} are a snapshot of the moment you generate the image — regenerate to refresh them.

Repo files

  • index.html — the entire app
  • README.md — this file
  • LICENSE — MIT
  • og-image.png — social-share preview image (1200×630). Generate it from the "share image" link in the app footer and drop it in the repo root; the page's Open Graph tags point here.
