feat(Poll): render poll translations in the reader's language - #3338
NikolaGoranNaumovski wants to merge 1 commit into
Conversation
With automatic translation enabled, the API returns a poll's question, options and answers translated, in name_i18n, text_i18n and answer_text_i18n. The default poll components now render the entry for client.user.language and fall back to the original text. - The question and options are translated in the message, the results and the full option list, and answers in the answers dialog. So is the question in the channel list preview and a quoted poll, and so is the option text in the channel list's vote preview. - A poll message starts in the translated view. MessageTranslationIndicator shows on it when the question or an option is translated, and "View original" switches the whole poll back along with any message text. - The indicator reads the live poll from client.polls, so translations that arrive after the first render show it without a reload. - New export: usePollTextTranslation(), for custom poll components that should follow the same translation view.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Detect answer-only poll translations.
If only poll answers have translations for userLanguage, pollHasTranslation returns false because it checks only the question and options. The indicator stays hidden, so the reader cannot switch those translated answers to the original view. Include translated answers in the detection and live-state selection. citeturn0search0

## Description of the changes, What, Why and How? **What.** `Poll.handlePollUpdated` now keeps the server's question and description translations (`name_i18n`, `description_i18n`) from a `poll.updated` event. **Why.** The backend translates polls automatically ([CHA-5308](https://linear.app/stream/issue/CHA-5308/implement-api-changes)), and #1878 added the response fields. But `handlePollUpda through `extractPollData`, which builds an `UpdatePollRequest` and lists its fields one by one. The translations aren't in that l `poll.state`. Checked against the live API with 10.0.0-rc.22: the server sends the new `name_i18n` in `poll.updated`, and the cache are affected: - **Edited question:** readers in other languages see the old translation, or the new question untranslated, until they reload. - **Language added on demand:** `client.translateMessage({ id }, { language })` on a poll message translates the poll on the server question's new language never reaches open clients. Option translations were not affected, because `options` is copied whole. I also checked the other paths that write poll state: `mess(`answer_text_i18n` arrives with `poll_vote`), `query()` and `reinitializeState`. None of them lose translations. **How.** `handlePollUpdated` copies both fields from `event.poll` explicitly, also when they are absent. `poll.updated` carries the whole poll (confirmed live, including after an option is added), and a change made under channel-only translation removes the old translations, so an absent field clears the stale ones. `extractPollData` is public and returns a request type, so it is lefis. There are no public API or type changes: `PollState` already has both fields. **Tests** - `test/unit/poll.test.js`: an edited question's translations are stored, a language added later is stored, the description's translations are stored, translations the event no longer carries are cleared. - `test/unit/poll_manager.test.ts`: `poll.updated` sent through the clientlanguage added later is stored, the description's translations are stored, and translations the event no longer carries are cleared. - `test/unit/poll_manager.test.ts`: `poll.updated` sent through the client updates the cached poll's `name_i18n`. `yarn types`, `yarn lint` and `yarn test` pass (4513 tests). The run reports 2 unhandled errors. Both also happen on an unmodified `release-v10`, in `poll.test.js` (`slowRequest.reject`) and `messageOperations/optimisticRouting.test.ts`, and are unrelated. Verified live: with this build, a `translateMessage` to a new language shows up in an open client's cached poll (`it_text` added). Before the fix, the cache wasunchanged. Consumer: GetStream/stream-chat-react [React PR link](GetStream/stream-chat-react#3338), poll translations in the React v15 UI. ## Changelog - Fix: `poll.updated` now keeps the poll's question and description translations (`name_i18n`, `description_i18n`), so edited questions and languages added with `translateMessage` show without a reload. ## Video of Fix https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/9910b24e-e169-4cd3-b687-e588d343c2b7
🎯 Goal
The Chat API now translates polls automatically (question, options and free-formanswers) on the shards where it's deployed, and
stream-chatexposes the translated fields (GetStream/stream-chat-js#1878). Until now the React SDK alwaysshowed the original text. With this change, readers see a poll in their owlanguage, the same way auto-translated message text already works, with "View original" covering the poll too. Ticket: ### 🛠 Implementation details Data.name_i18n, an option'stext_i18nand an answer'sanswer_texhave the same shape asmessage.i18n:_textentries pluslanguage, the source language. The reader's language isclient.user.lanthe same one message translation uses. Anything without a translation falls back to the original. Translated UI. -PollHeader(title) andPollOptionSelector(options in the message) -PollResults,PollOptionWithVotesHeaderandPollOptionsFullList(thquestion and options in the dialogs) -PollAnswerList(answers in the comments dialog) - The channel list preview ("📊 X created: …" and "… voted: …") -QuotedMessagePreview(a quoted poll's question) Shared logic. -Poll/utils/translations.ts(internal, not exported) is the only code that knows the key format. It hasgetPollTextTranslation, pollHasTranslation(question and options only; answers are only visible inside the comments dialog) andgetPollSourceLanguage. -usePollTextTranslation()(new public export, throughPoll/hooks) returnstranslate(original, i18n). It follows the message's translation view. ItMessageContextwithout requiring one, soPollHeader,PollResults` and the other poll parts gain no new context requirement.Translation view and indicator.
Messagestarts a poll message (poll_id) in the translated view. That's safebecause a text without a translation shows the original. The decision doesn'tuse
message.poll, which is a snapshot that poll events never update.MessageTranslationIndicatornow shows on poll messages, including messages that are only a poll. It subscribes to the live poll (client.polls, useStateStore), so translations that arrive later throughpoll.updatedshow it without a reload. "View original" switches the whole poll back along with any message text.Dependency note. An edited question, or a language added later with
translateMessage, needs the stream-chat-js fix in .Until that rc is required, the question keeps its old translation until (option translations already update live). A follow-up will raise the
stream-chatminimum once that rc is published.Docs. "New: polls render the reader's translation" in
