Closes #2380

PR type

  • Bug fix
  • New feature
  • Documentation only
  • Code refactoring
  • Maintenance/tooling
  • Breaking change

Summary

  • Return only updater-owned dev-binary.json, channel.json, main/ and tools/go file mutations to the current permission mode's ordinary checks instead of a blanket permission-store denial.
  • Keep the rest of the config home protected, guard policy aliases/ancestors and project guardrails, and reject shared-inode updater targets. The shell heuristic and independent consent boundaries are unchanged.
  • Cover the authorized-update case and negative controls across modes and through the production hook. This is not automatic permission to install or execute arbitrary code.

Changes

File Change
lib/auto-permission-runtime.ts Narrow file-tool updater scope while retaining authority protection and rejecting internal hardlink aliases.
tests/auto-permission-runtime.test.ts Update classification, deny, modes, symlink/ancestor, authority and hardlink regressions.
tests/auto-mode.test.ts Production-hook coverage for ordinary update checks and protected authority.
docs/permission-modes.md Explain executable authority, scoped file-tool treatment and conservative shell behavior.

Test plan

  • Observed the companion-update regression fail before the fix and pass afterward.
  • Observed the internal hardlink regression fail in the preliminary patch and pass after the fail-closed inode check.
  • Focused runtime, production hook, invariant and SDK tests: 61 passed.
  • Independent read-only verification: 126 passed, including dev-binary and main-channel upgrade/config-home tests and adversarial alias probes.
  • Typecheck: zero recorded diagnostics. Runtime-module consistency, provider contract and runtime harness passed.
  • Full local pnpm test is green. The WSL run exited 1 with 6,977 passed, 13 failed and 72 skipped. Ten failures overlap clean main (missing zip and unavailable filesystem watcher events); three additional failures hit real-time installer/lock deadlines and have not been conclusively attributed. Two earlier notification-fixture failures were traced to checkout-path width and passed unchanged from a shorter checkout path.
  • Required remote CI is green. CI must settle successfully before merge; no bypass is requested.

Scope and rollback

105 changed lines across four files. Reverting this commit restores the previous file guard and its matching tests/docs. No installed package or live permission configuration was changed to test this patch. Existing external hardlink/TOCTOU limitations remain outside this work unit; this hook is not an OS sandbox.

Contributor checklist

  • Linked issue has status:approved.
  • PR has exactly one type:* label: type:bug.
  • Shellcheck applicability assessed: no shell scripts changed.
  • Skill testing applicability assessed: no skills changed.
  • Documentation updated for the behavior change.
  • Conventional commit format; no attribution trailers added.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Permission Controls
    • Companion-tool updates can write or edit the updater’s designated files and directories, subject to the active permission mode. Auto mode still evaluates these changes and may deny them.
    • Permission preferences, runtime guardrails, model and persona settings, protected parent directories, and aliases to protected files remain blocked from direct writes and edits.
    • Shell protections remain conservative and unchanged. Protection also applies to hard links and dangling symlink aliases to policy files.

📝 Walkthrough

The config-home mutation guard now lets specific companion-update paths reach the current permission mode’s checks. It continues to block permission and guardrail state, including protected aliases and hard links. Tests cover these rules across permission modes and shell mutations.

Changes: Config-home mutation guard

Layer / File(s) Summary
Mutation guard and documented rules
lib/auto-permission-runtime.ts, docs/permission-modes.md
The guard permits the listed updater destinations to reach ordinary mode checks. It retains protections for policy files, parent directories, and hard-linked files. Resolution errors remain fail-closed. The documentation describes these rules.
Guard behavior tests
tests/auto-permission-runtime.test.ts, tests/auto-mode.test.ts
Tests cover updater paths, protected policy files and aliases, parent directories, shell mutations, hard links, Auto decisions, and confirmation counts.

A dangling working directory causes the action to be blocked rather than run, but this distinct behavior lacks the required regression test. Add coverage for the path before relying on it.

Explanation

Issue #2380 requires authorized updates to dev-binary.json, channel.json, main/, and tools/go to reach the selected permission mode's ordinary checks. The runtime change allows only these updater destinations after canonical-path and shared-inode checks. It continues to protect permission settings, guardrails, aliases, ancestors, and other config-home state. The runtime and production-hook tests cover allowed updates, Auto denials, protected files, and hardlink and symlink cases.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain within issue #2380. lib/auto-permission-runtime.ts implements the scoped updater exception and retains authority protection. The test changes verify the required positive and negative cases. The documentation describes the same boundary. No unrelated product change is shown.

Add coverage for dangling ctx.cwd.

The added dangling-symlink test blocks updater aliases in guard; it does not call AutoPermissionRuntime.check with a dangling ctx.cwd and a relative operand that produces evidence paths. Add a regression test for this path. Assert that the supported hook boundary blocks the action and does not execute it.

The production hook already catches the canonicalization exception and returns a blocked result. The test requirement does not establish a need to add a second blocked-result path inside check.
