🏷️ PR Type

  • type:bug — Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)

📝 Summary

Slice 1 of 3 splitting #4330, originally sized to the 400-line review budget (review fixes have since taken it over; see Review budget below). Denies the remote shell utilities (ssh, scp, sftp, rsync) by default in both permission overlays: the Claude Code deny list gains the bare, wildcard, canonical absolute install prefix, backslash-escape, and command/exec resolution-wrapper forms, and the OpenCode/Kilocode permission map moves from the per-command ask that #5273 left in place to an explicit deny across the same escape forms. Personal config keeps its explicit ask/allow entries; a human who wants a utility back re-enables it in their own config.

Rebased onto post-#5273 main: the inline OpenCode overlay from #4330 is superseded by the opencode_overlay.go builder, so the deny surface is expressed as builder rules instead of a static blob.

📂 Changes

File / Area What Changed
internal/components/permissions/inject.go Claude Code deny entries for the four utilities and their escape forms
internal/components/permissions/opencode_overlay.go Remote commands switch from ask to deny; path-prefix, root-path, and command/exec wrapper rules
internal/components/permissions/inject_test.go Deny-by-default approval matrix (incl. Kilocode + repeat injection), matcher boundary fixtures, pattern-presence tests, Claude inject-twice idempotency

🤖 AI Assistance

  • Material assistance used

Tool/model: Pi (el Gentleman harness) with Claude

Material scope: Split and rebase of #4330 onto post-#5273 main under user direction; OpenCode deny surface rewritten as builder rules; test reconciliation between the branch's blob-era tests and #5273's builder-era tests.

Verification performed: go test ./internal/components/permissions/ ./internal/components/agentguidance/ ./internal/components/ -count=1, go build ./..., gofmt clean on touched packages.

🧪 Test Plan

Unit Tests

go test ./internal/components/permissions/
  • Unit tests pass (touched packages, locally)
  • Go format passes (gofmt -l clean on touched packages)
  • E2E tests pass (left to CI; the guidance classification e2e lands in slice 3)
  • Manually tested locally (approval matrix runs Kilocode seeds through the written settings file)

Benchmark Validation: N/A (permission overlay change, no review-lifecycle/gate/benchmark surface).

Chain Context

Chain #4324 deny remote shell utilities (split of #4330)
Tracker PR Not needed (stacked to main, serialized for fork bases)
Position 1 of 3

Depends on None (post-#5273 main)
Follow-up Slice 2: env -i, env NAME=value and exec -a wrapper denies (fix/4324-2-deny-wrapper-invocations, +52/−9); direct env execution already lands here
Review budget 481 / 400: was 366 at opening; review-requested fixes added direct env denies, quoted command names, and catch-all ordering (3bf765e). size:exception requested

Ends with Remote shell utilities denied by default in both overlays, tests reconciled with #5273

Chain Overview

main
 └── 📍 #<this PR> Slice 1: deny engine (both overlays)
      └── Slice 2: wrapper denies (fix/4324-2-deny-wrapper-invocations)
           └── Slice 3: guidance + e2e (fix/4324-3-remote-boundary-guidance)

Scope

  • Includes: deny engine core, absolute-path/escape forms, fixture alignment, idempotency regression
  • Excludes: env/exec -a wrapper entries (slice 2), agent guidance rendering + e2e classification (slice 3)

Autonomy

  • CI is expected to pass for this PR branch
  • This PR has one deliverable scope
  • This PR can be rolled back without unrelated changes
  • Tests cover this unit

Slices 2 and 3 are already pushed to the fork (fix/4324-2-deny-wrapper-invocations, fix/4324-3-remote-boundary-guidance) and open as follow-up PRs once this slice merges, since fork-based PRs cannot target each other's branches without polluting the diff.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Security
    • Remote-shell commands (ssh, scp, sftp, and rsync) are denied by default when entered by name, through supported absolute paths, or with supported quoting, escaping, and command, exec, or env wrappers.
    • Existing permission settings are preserved, and explicitly configured bash prompts can still require approval.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Catch-all permission rules now retain the intended precedence, so specific rules continue to apply and existing rule order is preserved.

📝 Walkthrough

The OpenCode/Kilocode and Claude Code permission overlays add deny rules for ssh, scp, sftp, and rsync. The rules cover bare commands, specified absolute paths, and selected escaped or wrapped forms. Tests cover the rules, permission merging, and repeated injection.

Changes: Remote-shell permission policy

Layer / File(s) Summary
OpenCode/Kilocode rules and tests
internal/components/permissions/opencode_overlay.go, internal/components/permissions/inject_test.go
The OpenCode overlay denies remote-shell utilities by bare name, wildcard, supported absolute paths, and command or exec wrappers. Tests check these patterns and confirm that the global * rule remains allow.
Claude Code rules and tests
internal/components/permissions/inject.go, internal/components/permissions/inject_test.go
Claude Code’s deny list covers bare commands, supported absolute paths, backslash-prefixed commands, and command or exec wrappers. Tests check merging with existing permissions, bypassPermissions, and repeat-injection behavior.

Change: Bug fix

Possibly related PRs

Suggested reviewers: alan-thegentleman

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 3bf76

This change adds default denials for selected remote-shell commands in both permission overlays while preserving explicit user settings. No concrete merge blocker is identified; normal checks can proceed.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 1803e

The changes tighten default remote-shell permissions without adding execution authority. Risk remains low rather than minimal because enforcement across supported versions is not fully verified, and existing settings can retain earlier approval choices.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected boundary is agent shell execution reaching remote assets. Any unmatched invocation would operate with existing process permissions, network reachability and remote authentication authority; the changed overlays do not grant new identities or credentials. Specific remote assets and environments are not established by the evidence.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The supplied authorization-bypass candidate is deferred, not a verified finding. Its decisive gap is Claude matching of env NAME=value ssh in the minimum supported version. The visible env ssh deny entry and pattern-presence tests do not resolve that behavior, and the base lacked these remote-command denials.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — OpenCode/Kilocode personal rules remain authoritative, with tests explicitly retaining scalar ask and ssh allow choices. The OpenCode fixture models last-match precedence and slash normalization but excludes actual shell-command extraction, so it is not end-to-end enforcement evidence.
  • observed — Claude injection uses overlay-wins merging: its deny array replaces an existing array, and its defaultMode replaces an existing mode. This ownership behavior predates the PR; adding remote deny entries does not establish a new loss of user policy.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate the emitted policy against supported platform versions, including assignment-bearing env invocations, wrapper normalization and Claude deny precedence in bypassPermissions mode. Document fresh-install versus upgrade behavior so preserved legacy approval rules are not mistaken for enforced denial.

Address the CodeRabbit findings on Gentleman-Programming#5285:

- The exact form "env tool ..." (env directly executing the utility,
no arguments in between) matched none of the deny patterns; add
Bash(env tool:*) to the Claude Code deny list and
deny("env tool *") to the OpenCode builder, and flip
"env ssh example.invalid" from a matcher-boundary allow fixture to a
  denied bypass form.
- The pre-existing-settings fixture in the Claude inject test used
literal backslash-n sequences inside a raw string, which is not valid
JSON between tokens, so the merge path was never exercised. Restore
the real-newline fixture so MergeJSONObjects parses the existing
permissions block and the test asserts the deny list lands on top of
  it.

Both CodeRabbit findings are addressed in 1803eca:

  • The pre-existing-settings fixture now uses real newlines, so MergeJSONObjects parses the existing permissions block and the test genuinely exercises the merge (it still lands the deny list on top).
  • env tool ... direct execution is now denied exactly (Bash(env tool:*) in Claude Code, deny("env tool *") in the OpenCode builder), and env ssh example.invalid moved from the matcher-boundary allow list to the denied bypass forms.

The argument-bearing wrappers (env -i, env VAR=..., exec -a name) stay in the follow-up slice (fix/4324-2-deny-wrapper-invocations on my fork) to keep this PR at 379/400.

Deny ssh, scp, sftp, and rsync by default in the Claude Code deny list
(bare, wildcard, and canonical absolute install prefixes, backslash
escape, command/exec resolution wrappers) and in the OpenCode/Kilocode
permission map (bare, wildcard, path prefixes, root-level path that also
reaches backslash escapes, and command/exec wrappers), replacing the
per-command ask that Gentleman-Programming#5273 left in place. Personal config keeps its
explicit ask/allow entries; a human re-enables a utility explicitly.

Tests: deny-by-default approval matrix incl. Kilocode and repeat
injection, matcher boundary fixtures for the enumerated bypass forms,
pattern-presence tests for both overlays, and a Claude inject-twice
idempotency regression.

…rogramming#4324)

'ssh' example.invalid runs ssh but matches neither Bash(ssh:*) nor the
OpenCode "ssh *" rule, and both overlays auto-approve unmatched commands.
Deny the single- and double-quoted spellings of ssh, scp, sftp, and rsync
in the Claude Code and OpenCode overlays.

The OpenCode rules alone did not take effect: OpenCode applies the last
matching rule, and a leading quote sorts before the catch-all "*", so the
catch-all overrode them. The overlay now encodes "*" first, and the
permission merge keeps an added catch-all ahead of every added rule. Tests
resolve the injected file, not only the rule list.

The deny list closes these known spellings; it is not a shell parser.

OpenCode resolves permission rules last-match-wins. When a user's bash
map held "*":"allow" after another key, the merge placed the added
remote-shell denies before it, so ssh/scp/sftp/rsync resolved to allow.

Insert added rules right after the existing catch-all allow wherever it
sits, keeping every user rule in place: rules before the catch-all were
already overridden by it, and rules after it still win.

@Alan-TheGentleman following up on my Oct 9 label ask, and sending it to you since you merge most PRs here. Each PR below links a status:approved issue, is mergeable, and has every other check green. The only failing checks are the label gate and, on the two larger ones, Cognitive Load:

One small housekeeping item: #2196 still carries status:needs-info from Aug 3 next to status:approved from Sep 28. Its fix is up as Gentleman-Programming/gentle-shell#2352, so needs-info can probably go.

If any of these should be split or re-scoped instead, say which and I'll take it from there.
