EarthCODE (https://earthcode.esa.int/) is a strategic ESA Earth Observation initiative supporting Open Science practice in Earth System Sciences. It helps scientists publish, discover, explore, reuse, modify, and build upon EO research outputs, with a focus on FAIR data products and reproducible workflows.

This hands-on workshop introduces participants to EarthCODE through the practical reuse of openly available ESA EO research data. Participants will browse the EarthCODE Open Science Catalog, access data through STAC and Python tools, refresh core Pangeo concepts, and work through a guided burnt forest area analysis.

During this 105-minute workshop, participants will:

  1. Understand what EarthCODE is and why it matters for FAIR EO research.
  2. Browse datasets, workflows, and examples in the EarthCODE Open Science Catalog.
  3. Access EO research data using STAC, Xarray, Zarr, and Dask concepts.
  4. Run a guided case study analysing burnt forest areas.
  5. Explore additional EarthCODE data access examples, including SEASFIRE and Antarctica cubes.

Participants should bring a laptop and use the existing agile26-pangeo conda environment. No package installation is part of the workshop
