Previously, diagnostics were often run on long climatologies. With shorter runs becoming more common, adding uncertainty/statistical testing would help users better interpret whether climatology means and model/obs or model/model differences are robust. And it is possible to do so because e3sm_diags support the option to take time-series as input in additional to directly use ncclimo pre-computed climo files. Suggested previously by @huiwanpnnl and more recently by @whannah1 .
