Two parts, one commit each:

  • Release automation (abeb920). Around 0.5.0, two release steps had to be fixed by hand; now both happen automatically. Sections 1 and 2 below.
  • krm-foyer's renewed field report, asks 6–8 (ad999de, review follow-ups in ec3dc6e and d8d8052). Section 3.

Merge note: if this is squash-merged, keep a feat: title so the next release picks up the new kube.HTTPClientFor API.

1. The adapter's requirement on the core module

gateway/kube/go.mod requires gateway by version, and no release ever moved that line. So:

Changes:

  • The release owns the line. The adapter now requires the core at v0.5.0, marked // x-release-please-version, and release-please-config.json gives gateway/kube a generic extra-file for go.mod. Every release PR rewrites the line to the version being released, in the same commit that gets tagged. A released adapter therefore always resolves at least its own core, which matters because it depends on core behaviour: an older core would retry UPSTREAM_UNAVAILABLE in a tight loop.
  • No pseudo-version pins. Release Please's version pattern stops at the - in a pseudo-version, so it would turn v0.4.1-0.20261002130336-e723903f0c9e into v0.6.0-e723903f0c9e; I checked this against the action's actual regex. CI's a stranger can go get this step now:
    • refuses a pseudo-version or a missing marker on that line;
    • builds an unreleased commit by fetching the adapter and the core at that same commit, as someone using an unreleased commit would;
    • builds a release by the adapter's tag alone, so the adapter must resolve its own core;
    • on a release PR, before the tag exists, prints a notice as before.
  • Dependabot ignores github.com/ConfigButler/krm-stream/gateway.

2. Changelogs

Release Please inserts each version below hand-written sections and never removes them. As a result the 0.4.0 and 0.5.0 notes stayed under ## Unreleased.

3. Asks 6–8 from the renewed field report

  • Ask 6: refuse redirects (credential leak). client-go follows redirects and puts the configured credential on the redirected request. I reproduced it: through kube.NewBackendForConfig with a bearer token, a redirecting API server handed the token to a recording server.
    • Now NewBackendForConfig builds its client with the new kube.HTTPClientFor(cfg), which refuses redirects.
    • A refused redirect is a terminal INTERNAL (it won't go away on retry). Its cause is kube.ErrRedirectRefused, and its message names no address.
    • The shared-host example now uses the refusing client for both its service and data clients. The docs' snippets use NewBackendForConfig, and explain HTTPClientFor for hosts that build their own dynamic client.
  • Ask 7: a watch that ends before it's of use. An upstream that ends every watch before its snapshot completes, or right after it, was reopened in a tight loop on one connection; the new tests measured 5–11 million events in 5 seconds on the old loop.
    • A cycle now counts as useful only once it has completed its snapshot and stayed live for 1s.
    • Deviation from the report: the first early end is still recovered on the same connection, because spec §5 and conformance item 3 require continuity loss to be recovered without dropping the connection, and the corpus replays a 410 with no time passing. A second early end in a row ends the connection with a non-terminal UPSTREAM_UNAVAILABLE, so the client's backoff takes over. §4.3 now states this.
    • The Unwrap trap the report describes is fixed: a StreamError now decides before ErrWatchClosed, so an UPSTREAM_UNAVAILABLE caused by a closed watch is no longer reopened as a routine close.
  • Ask 8: client-go's own 429/5xx retries. I verified it in client-go v0.36.0: up to 10 retries when the answer carries Retry-After.
    • The operations guide now explains it, and the early-end rule.
    • Pushback: I kept those retries on. The API server sets their pace, and the gateway has already sent the SSE headers, so the browser holds a heartbeating connection reported as syncing, not stuck. Turning them off would need a transport that strips Retry-After, losing the hint on 5xx, and would turn one paced wait into a reconnect plus fresh snapshot from every browser.
  • The renewed report is committed, with its two krm-foyer links made absolute again.

Review follow-ups (ec3dc6e, d8d8052)

  • The participant's identity client refuses redirects too. The shared-host example's SelfSubjectReview client carries the participant's token, and was still built on a client that follows redirects. A new test redirects that request to a recording path on the same TLS server and asserts the path is never hit. The test fails on the old example.
  • HTTPClientFor no longer changes http.DefaultClient. For a configuration needing no special transport, rest.HTTPClientFor returns http.DefaultClient itself, so setting the redirect policy changed every HTTP caller in the process; I reproduced this. The client is now copied first, and a test checks that the default client is untouched.
  • Shared watches that end early back off. Each connection was bounded to two early cycles, but a cohort of reconnecting subscribers still reopened the shared upstream once each (the new test saw 7–12 opens for 100 streams on the old code). The shared scope now applies the same rule to its upstream watch:
    • one early end is tolerated, and a second in a row backs off;
    • only the end of a watch that was of use resets the backoff, which also removes the delayed-recovery race structurally;
    • tests cover 100 concurrent streams over an incomplete snapshot and over a 410 straight after one (exactly 2 upstream opens), and check that long-lived watches keep recovering in band without backoff.
  • Typed errors reach shared subscribers intact (d8d8052). die() still turned anything matching ErrWatchClosed into RESYNC_REQUIRED, so a terminal FORBIDDEN, or an UPSTREAM_UNAVAILABLE with a hint, caused by a closed watch reached the browser as a resync it retried. Only an untyped close is converted now. Tests cover both errors, via Next() and as a watch ERROR event, plus one through the gateway: the browser's only error event is the terminal FORBIDDEN. Both remaining ErrWatchClosed checks in the gateway now check for a StreamError first.
  • The operations guide is corrected. It no longer claims that turning off client-go's retries requires stripping Retry-After; it states why the default is kept.

Testing

  • task verify passes.
  • I ran the new go-get path from a clean module outside the workspace against the pushed commit: both modules resolve at abeb920, and the adapter builds.
  • The changelog guard passes on the tree, and fails when an ## Unreleased heading is planted.
  • I simulated Release Please's version regex on the new go.mod line: it rewrites v0.5.0 to v0.6.0 cleanly.
  • Asks 6–8: each new test fails on the code from before its fix, and passes now.
  • The real-cluster suite passes against k3s v1.36.4 after the follow-ups, including the shared-host example: two identities, revocation, and the watch count returning to baseline.
  • What remains to verify is the first real release PR after this merges: its go.mod line should name the new version.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Kubernetes connections refuse redirects, preventing caller credentials from being forwarded to another destination.
    • Repeated watch endings before or shortly after synchronization now close the connection with an UPSTREAM_UNAVAILABLE error instead of reopening indefinitely.
    • Improved error reporting distinguishes authentication failures and upstream availability issues, and avoids exposing unexpected error text to the browser.
    • Kubernetes throttling and server errors now report UPSTREAM_UNAVAILABLE; response details are limited when reading Kubernetes error messages.
  • New Features
    • Retry hints can guide managed-connector reconnect timing and are available to error handlers.
  • Documentation
    • Updated setup, operations, and release guidance to reflect current connection and recovery behavior.

Two release steps needed hand-fixing around 0.5.0, and both now run by
themselves.

The adapter's requirement on the core module was never moved by a release.
Adapter changes needing unreleased core API had to pin a pseudo-version by
hand, Dependabot proposed stale bumps (#36), and v0.5.0 shipped requiring a
commit that lives only on a merged PR branch. Now:

- gateway/kube/go.mod requires the core at its release tag, marked
x-release-please-version, and Release Please rewrites it in every release PR
  to the version being released.
- CI's go-get check builds an unreleased adapter together with the core from
the same commit, and builds a release by its tag alone. It refuses a
pseudo-version (the release updater would mangle it) and a missing marker.
- Dependabot ignores the internal core module.

Release Please also inserts each version below hand-written "Unreleased"
changelog sections and never removes them, so released notes stayed labelled
unreleased. File the existing notes under the versions that shipped them, and
make CI refuse any section Release Please did not write.

…stop reopening watches that end early

Addresses asks 6 to 8 of krm-foyer's renewed field report.

Ask 6: client-go follows redirects and puts the configured credential on the
redirected request, so a backend holding the caller's token sent it wherever a
redirect pointed. kube.NewBackendForConfig now builds its client with the new
kube.HTTPClientFor, which refuses redirects; a refused redirect is a terminal
INTERNAL (it will not go away on retry) whose cause is kube.ErrRedirectRefused.
The shared-host example and the docs use the refusing client.

Ask 7: the stream loop reopened at once after ErrWatchClosed or
RESYNC_REQUIRED, so an upstream ending every watch before its snapshot
completed, or straight after, was reopened in a tight loop on one connection.
A cycle now counts as useful only once it has completed its snapshot and stayed
live for a second. The first early end is still recovered in band (spec §5);
a second in a row ends the connection with a non-terminal UPSTREAM_UNAVAILABLE.
A StreamError now decides before ErrWatchClosed, so an UPSTREAM_UNAVAILABLE
caused by a closed watch is no longer read as a routine close through Unwrap.

Ask 8: the operations guide says client-go retries a 429 or 5xx carrying
Retry-After up to ten times before the gateway sees it. Those retries stay on:
the API server sets the pace, the browser holds a heartbeating connection in
"syncing" meanwhile, and turning them off would trade one paced wait for a
reconnect and fresh snapshot from every browser.

Also record krm-foyer's renewed report, with its links made absolute.

…t intact, and back off shared watches that end early

Review follow-ups for asks 6 to 8.

- The shared-host example's participant SelfSubjectReview client carried the
participant's token through a client that followed redirects. It is now
  built on kube.HTTPClientFor too.
- rest.HTTPClientFor returns http.DefaultClient for a configuration needing no
special transport, so installing the redirect policy on it changed every
HTTP caller in the process. HTTPClientFor now copies the client first.
- The stream loop bounded each connection to two early cycles, but a
SharedBackend dropped an early-ending upstream watch without any backoff, so
a cohort of reconnecting subscribers still reopened it once each. The shared
scope now applies the same rule to its upstream: a watch is of use once it
has completed its snapshot and stayed live for a second; one early end is
tolerated, a second in a row backs off. Only a useful watch's end resets the
backoff, which also removes the delayed-recovery race structurally.
- The operations guide no longer claims that turning client-go's retries off
requires stripping Retry-After; it states why the default is kept.

…d by a closed watch

SharedBackend's die() classified its cause StreamError-first for the backoff,
but then still converted anything matching errors. Is(cause, ErrWatchClosed)
into RESYNC_REQUIRED for subscribers. StreamError.Unwrap exposes its Cause, so a
terminal FORBIDDEN, or an UPSTREAM_UNAVAILABLE with a retry hint, caused by a
closed watch reached the browser as a resync it retried. Decide once whether
the cause is typed, and convert only an untyped close.

…e version

The release check only verified that the core tag the adapter requires exists.
Had a release PR left the marked requirement at an older, tagged version, the
adapter-tag-only build would pass while resolving an older core. Compare the
two when RELEASE_VERSION is set. (CodeRabbit review on #42.)

CodeRabbit's outside-diff finding on ad999de, "Apply redirect refusal to the participant-token client" (gateway/kube/examples/sharedstream/handler.go), was fixed in ec3dc6e. The participant's SelfSubjectReview client is now built on kube.HTTPClientFor with kubernetes.NewForConfigAndClient. TestParticipantIdentityResolutionRefusesRedirects redirects that request to a recording path on the same TLS server and asserts the path is never hit.
