What was wrong

A WatchRule or ClusterWatchRule decided whether its GitTarget's failure was terminal by checking the mirrored GitTargetReady reason against a hand-kept list (gitTargetReadyReasonIsStalled). The GitTarget makes the same decision itself, in gitTargetReadinessGates, and publishes it as Stalled=True.

The list had fallen behind. Three reasons that stall a GitTarget were missing from it:

A rule on such a target showed Reconciling=True ("Waiting for GitTarget") for as long as the target stayed broken. Its kstatus therefore read InProgress, not Failed, and that misleads kubectl wait, Flux dependsOn and alerting alike. A comment in manifestanalyzer/acceptance_refusal.go claimed every refusal reason was in the list; that was not true.

The fix

  • gitTargetStalled(target) returns the GitTarget's own verdict: Ready is published and not True, and Stalled is True.
  • Both rule kinds pass that verdict into ruleReadiness.
  • The reason list is deleted, so a reason the GitTarget learns to stall on later reaches its rules without a second edit.
  • gitTargetReadyCondition uses the same helper, so the mirrored condition and the verdict cannot disagree.
  • The GitTarget watch predicate both rule kinds use now also compares the verdict. One reason can be a stall or progress (the apply-trigger gate reports it either way), so a target can flip Stalled while its mirrored status and reason stay the same. Without this comparison the rule would keep its old answer until the periodic requeue. CodeRabbit found this.

Rule-side reasons such as GitTargetNotFound were already stalled directly through stallRule, so nothing they covered is lost.

Tests

TestRuleReadiness_StallsOnTheGitTargetsVerdictWhateverItsReason runs the reconcile's path from a GitTarget object to the rule's trio. Its cases:

  • the three missed reasons;
  • a reason the package has never heard of;
  • a target that is still converging (RenderRechecking), which must stay progressing.

TestGitTargetReadyProjectionChanged gains both directions of a Stalled flip under an unchanged status and reason.

Local results: task lint and task test pass (coverage 80.0%, baseline 80.2%). e2e runs on CI.

Found in the post-merge design-doc sweep after #419 and #420.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Watch rules now accurately reflect when their Git target is stalled, including for previously unrecognized stall reasons. A target that is still reconciling without being stalled no longer causes the rule to be marked stalled. This makes readiness and stalled status more consistent across watch rules and cluster watch rules.

A WatchRule or ClusterWatchRule judged whether its GitTarget's failure
was terminal from a list of reasons it kept by hand, while the GitTarget
decides the same thing in gitTargetReadinessGates and publishes it as
Stalled=True. The list had fallen behind: AmbiguousLayout,
ParentBranchNotFound and the apply trigger's SourceMismatch all stall a
GitTarget, and a rule on such a target read as Reconciling=True
("Waiting for GitTarget") for as long as the target stayed broken.

Both rule kinds now pass the GitTarget's Stalled verdict into
ruleReadiness and the list is gone, so a reason the GitTarget learns to
stall on reaches its rules without a second edit. A table test runs the
reconcile's path from GitTarget to rule trio for the missed reasons, a
reason the package has never heard of, and a target still converging.

📝 Walkthrough

GitTarget stalled status now determines whether dependent WatchRule and ClusterWatchRule readiness reports a stalled state. The controllers pass the verdict to ruleReadiness, which no longer infers stalls from a fixed list of condition reasons.

gitTargetStalled checks the GitTarget’s Ready and Stalled conditions. Both controllers pass its verdict to ruleReadiness, replacing reason-list classification. Tests cover known and unknown stalled reasons and a progressing target. The comment describes rules as stalling on the verdict.

Some rules may report an outdated readiness state until their next update. This is a bounded delay, but the predicate should account for stalled-verdict changes.

Enqueue rules when the GitTarget stalled verdict changes.

When the derived Ready status and reason remain unchanged, a Stalled transition is dropped. Compare the stalled verdict as part of the predicate.

…ict flips

The GitTarget watch predicate for both rule kinds compared only the
mirrored Ready status and reason. The apply-trigger gate reports one
reason as either a stall or progress, so a GitTarget could flip Stalled
with both unchanged, and the rule, which now stalls on that verdict,
kept the old answer until its periodic requeue. Compare the verdict too.
