🌐 ABSTRACT & CONTRIBUTION OVERVIEW

This repository contains the system architecture flowcharts, structural algorithmic blocks, and LaTeX typesetting components for a completed research paper focusing on Explainable AI (XAI) within autonomous robotic control.

As robotic systems transition from deterministic state machines to complex deep learning models, their decision-making processes increasingly behave like uninterpretable "black boxes." This lack of transparency poses a critical barrier to safety validation and human-robot collaboration. This research presents an algorithmic framework that extracts internal model feature weights in real-time, mapping them to human-readable transparency profiles. This ensures that a robot’s navigation or manipulation path can be audited and verified under dynamic operational constraints.

🎯 Key Paper Contributions:

  • Real-Time Transparency Interface: Formalized a low-overhead telemetry framework that outputs local explanation vectors alongside motor control commands.
  • Feature Attribution Mapping: Developed a lightweight attribution model optimized to run on resource-constrained embedded robotic controllers without degrading cycle speed.
  • Human-Robot Trust Metrics: Established a structured design methodology to evaluate how real-time semantic explanations affect system safety and operator trust profiles.

🧪 MATHEMATICAL ARCHITECTURE & FEATURE ATTRIBUTION

To achieve real-time transparency without overloading the robotic compute module, the system utilizes a localized surrogate model architecture. Let $f(x)$ represent the complex, opaque deep learning control policy (the "black box"), and let $g(x')$ represent a simplified, inherently interpretable surrogate model (e.g., a linear regressor).

To ensure the explanation is accurate for a specific robotic decision, we optimize the local fidelity by minimizing the loss ($L$) over a weighted proximity ($\pi_x$), while strictly penalizing the complexity ($\Omega$) of the explanation model:

$$\xi(x) = \arg\min_{g \in G} L(f, g, \pi_x) + \Omega(g)$$

Through this formulation, the attribution weight vector ($\Phi_i$) for each sensor input feature is extracted dynamically. This allows the system to output a human-readable telemetry string (e.g., "Actuator triggered due to 84% reliance on LiDAR proximity sensor $S_2$") alongside the raw motor command, establishing an auditable trust metric.
