reopen a virtual dataset for renaming paths?

Can we reopen a virtual dataset so we can rename the paths? I thought open_dataset or open_virtual_dataset might work, but the former needs to find the referenced path and obviously can't.
I'm also having issues reopening the file in situ, so will run it again. Can we only do this in situ? Obviously I can modify the .parq directly which sort of seems preferable

You should be able to reopen kerchunk references as a virtual dataset using open_virtual_dataset('refs.json', reader='kerchunk').

There is no equivalent ability to re-open Icechunk references yet (see earth-mover/icechunk#104).

Unclear what you mean by "in situ".
