GitHub is US-made and US-owned, plus Microsoft Israel R&D states that one of its teams is responsible for building and maintaining GitHub's runtime platform:

Maybe GitHub could remain as a mirror while the main repository moves elsewhere.

I think that the choice of this platform was mainly pragmatic rather than an endorsement of GitHub or Microsoft.

As the project owner explained that GitHub was chosen because it is where the majority of developers already are, which helped get contributions quickly. In the first 3 days alone, 30+ pull requests were received, which would have been difficult to achieve on other platforms.
