Border rendering in Simplest layout

The Simplest layout randomly sometimes renders a border, and sometimes does not. I can't really tell what the conditions are.

I ended up using Simplest layout because it does not ignore withdrawn windows like other layouts do making them visible.

I've never seen that (my secondary layout is Tabbed Simplest, used on my mail workspace among others). Can you share your xmonad.hs?

I think that the border is shown when there are multiple windows on the desktop and not when there is only one (although only one window is ever shown).

There is some focus switching problem which causes the border to be rendered as unfocused when some of the windows are shown because they do not get focus. The unfocused frame blends with the window and is hard to notice but on closer look the border is always there when multiple windows are on the desktop.

Note: borders work as expected when Simplest is replaced with Full but then withdrawn windows are not visible.
