"Mandelbrot Set" hangs after a dozen button presses

Fixed in Mandelbrot Set 1.4 (#241).

Both halves of your report:

The hang. The fractal was being computed inside the draw callback, so all 8192 pixels were iterated on the GUI service thread - and the app asked for a fresh frame at least ten times a second whether or not the view had moved. The draw callback held the state mutex for the whole computation and the event loop needed that same mutex before it could act on a button press, so at most one press could be handled per frame, and each press it handled immediately queued another frame. Once you zoomed in far enough that most pixels hit the iteration cap, key auto-repeat while scrolling outran that and filled the 8-slot event queue, at which point the input callback blocked the GUI service thread itself. Your repro (zoom ~4x, then scroll down/right) is exactly the shape that triggers it.

The computation now runs on the app thread, only when the view actually changes, and is drawn as a prepared bitmap. A coarse preview appears first and is refined at full resolution in bands, with the input queue polled between scanlines, so a slow picture at deep zoom is abandoned the moment you press a key rather than blocking anything. The input callback no longer waits either.
