Indeed - and more generally, make a checklist of how to make a release, with all steps to perform for a release (what to test, what to change, if there is anything to compile manually, updates to wannier.org website, ...) as a short bullet point list, to simplify life. Note in particular this should include the version string in the code: I just realized e.g. that 4.0.2 has the old 4.0.1 string here:

Other things to include in the general "checklist" for the release:

• release a RC a week before, and contact people maintaining packages (e.g. conda, fedora, ...) (list should be online once Website updates #700 is merged
• check file size of release
