Why the change. VYNCINT could not be finished: five days inside the letters were already lit, and nothing takes a contribution away, so it reported holed every day for months (#3). An alarm that is always on is an alarm you stop reading.

A picture covering only days that have not happened yet starts clean, and this one does.

Why two shades. Every adjacent pair of GitHub's greens is 9–20 ΔE apart in the worst palette it ships, so a picture using all five puts near-identical shades side by side. Level 0 against level 2 is ΔE 50. It is also what makes it affordable: this graph's 2026 peak is 137, so a level-4 day costs 110 contributions and a level-2 day costs 35 — the same heart in bright green would owe about 4,400 rather than 1,960.

Why it starts on the 30th and not today. Today already had contributions, and a heart's top-left corner is dark. Starting this week would have opened with a hole that nothing takes away — the same way VYNCINT died. The first column a picture can have is the first one still entirely in the future.
