From 48e086fc0dd5347e45b4ee2b9c9512963ec79771 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Jeremy Quirke Date: Sun, 5 Mar 2023 22:09:07 -0800 Subject: [PATCH 1/9] Support simultanous name and group tags As per Dig issue: https://github.com/uber-go/dig/issues/380 In order to support Fx feature requests https://github.com/uber-go/fx/issues/998 https://github.com/uber-go/fx/issues/1036 We need to be able to drop the restriction, both in terms of options dig.Name and dig.Group and dig.Out struct annotations on `name` and `group` being mutually exclusive. In a future PR, this can then be exploited to populate value group maps where the 'name' tag becomes the key of a map[string][T] --- decorate.go | 2 +- dig_test.go | 251 As part of https://github.com/uber-go/dig/issues/380 we allowed names and groups tags/options to co-exist to ultimately support Fx feature request https://github.com/uber-go/fx/issues/998. We now intend to support Map value groups as per https://github.com/uber-go/fx/issues/1036. We will do this in 2 steps. 1. This PR will begin tracking any names passed into value groups with out changing any external facing functionality. 2. a subsequent PR will exploit this structure to support Map value groups. --- constructor.go | 16 ++++++++-------- container.go | 14 +++++++------- param.go | 6 +++++- result.go | 14 ++++++++++---- result_test.go | 2 +- scope.go | 31 ++++++++++++++++++------------- 6 files changed, 49 insertions(+), 34 deletions(-) diff --git a/constructor.go b/constructor.go index d46a273d..a731b183 100644 --- a/constructor.go +++ b/constructor.go @@ -213,7 +213,7 @@ func (n *constructorNode) Call(c containerStore) (err error) { // would be made to a containerWriter and defers them until Commit is called. type stagingContainerWriter struct { values map[key]reflect.Value - groups map[key][]reflect.Value + groups map[key][]keyedGroupValue } var _ containerWriter = (*stagingContainerWriter)(nil) @@ -221,7 +221,7 @@ var _ containerWriter = (*stagingContainerWriter)(nil) func newStagingContainerWriter() *stagingContainerWriter { return &stagingContainerWriter{ values: make(map[key]reflect.Value), - groups: make(map[key][]reflect.Value), + groups: make(map[key][]keyedGroupValue), } } @@ -233,12 +233,12 @@ func (sr *stagingContainerWriter) setDecoratedValue(_ string, _ reflect.Type, _ digerror.BugPanicf("stagingContainerWriter.setDecoratedValue must never be called") } -func (sr *stagingContainerWriter) submitGroupedValue(group string, t reflect.Type, v reflect.Value) { +func (sr *stagingContainerWriter) submitGroupedValue(group, mapKey string, t reflect.Type, v reflect.Value) { k := key{t: t, group: group} - sr.groups[k] = append(sr.groups[k], v) + sr.groups[k] = append(sr.groups[k], keyedGroupValue{key: mapKey, value: v}) } -func (sr *stagingContainerWriter) submitDecoratedGroupedValue(_ string, _ reflect.Type, _ reflect.Value) { +func (sr *stagingContainerWriter) submitDecoratedGroupedValue(_, _ string, _ reflect.Type, _ reflect.Value) { digerror.BugPanicf("stagingContainerWriter.submitDecoratedGroupedValue must never be called") } @@ -248,9 +248,9 @@ func (sr *stagingContainerWriter) Commit(cw containerWriter) { cw.setValue(k.name, k.t, v) } - for k, vs := range sr.groups { - for _, v := range vs { - cw.submitGroupedValue(k.group, k.t, v) + for k, kgvs := range sr.groups { + for _, kgv := range kgvs { + cw.submitGroupedValue(k.group, kgv.key, k.t, kgv.value) } } } diff --git a/container.go b/container.go index a875b5e0..2d1336a2 100644 --- a/container.go +++ b/container.go @@ -82,12 +82,12 @@ type containerWriter interface { setDecoratedValue(name string, t reflect.Type, v reflect.Value) // submitGroupedValue submits a value to the value group with the provided - // name. - submitGroupedValue(name string, t reflect.Type, v reflect.Value) + // name and optional map key. + submitGroupedValue(name, mapKey string, t reflect.Type, v reflect.Value) // submitDecoratedGroupedValue submits a decorated value to the value group - // with the provided name. - submitDecoratedGroupedValue(name string, t reflect.Type, v reflect.Value) + // with the provided name and optional map key. + submitDecoratedGroupedValue(name, mapKey string, t reflect.Type, v reflect.Value) } // containerStore provides access to the Container's underlying data store. @@ -109,7 +109,7 @@ type containerStore interface { // Retrieves all values for the provided group and type. // // The order in which the values are returned is undefined. - getValueGroup(name string, t reflect.Type) []reflect.Value + getValueGroup(name string, t reflect.Type) []keyedGroupValue // Retrieves all decorated values for the provided group and type, if any. getDecoratedValueGroup(name string, t reflect.Type) (reflect.Value, bool) @@ -292,8 +292,8 @@ func (bs byTypeName) Swap(i int, j int) { bs[i], bs[j] = bs[j], bs[i] } -func shuffledCopy(rand *rand.Rand, items []reflect.Value) []reflect.Value { - newItems := make([]reflect.Value, len(items)) +func shuffledCopy(rand *rand.Rand, items []keyedGroupValue) []keyedGroupValue { + newItems := make([]keyedGroupValue, len(items)) for i, j := range rand.Perm(len(items)) { newItems[i] = items[j] } diff --git a/param.go b/param.go index 07f72e09..a316b109 100644 --- a/param.go +++ b/param.go @@ -628,6 +628,7 @@ func (pt paramGroupedSlice) Build(c containerStore) (reflect.Value, error) { } // Check if we have decorated values + // qjeremy(how to handle this with maps?) if decoratedItems, ok := pt.getDecoratedValues(c); For example: ``` type Params struct { dig.In Things []int `group:"foogroup"` MapOfThings map[string]int `group:"foogroup"` } type Result struct { dig.Out Int1 int `name:"foo1" group:"foogroup"` Int2 int `name:"foo2" group:"foogroup"` Int3 int `name:"foo3" group:"foogroup"` } c.Provide(func() Result { return Result{Int1: 1, Int2: 2, Int3: 3} }) c.Invoke(func(p Params) { }) ``` p.Things will be a value group slice as per usual, containing the elements {1,2,3} in an arbitrary order. p.MapOfThings will be a key-value pairing of {"foo1":1, "foo2":2, "foo3":3}. --- decorate.go | 4 +- When map value groups were added, the decoration interaction may not have been fully considered. + +### Key Concerns: + +1. **Type Mismatch**: + - `getDecoratedValues()` calls `c.getDecoratedValueGroup(pt.Group, pt.Type)` + - `pt.Type` could be `[]T` (slice) or `map[string]T` (map) + - Decorators might return slice types but consumers expect map types + +2. **Inconsistent Return Types**: + ```go + // Scenario that may be broken: + c.Provide(func() int{return 1}, dig.Name("a"), dig.Group("nums")) + c.Provide(func() int{return 2}, dig.Name("b"), dig.Group("nums")) + + // Decorator expects and returns slice + c.Decorate(func(nums []int) []int { + return append(nums, 999) + }) + + // Consumer expects map - what happens? + type In struct { + dig.In + NumMap map[string]int `group:"nums"` // May get slice instead? + } + ``` + +3. **Missing Test Coverage**: + - No tests combining decoration + map consumption + - Unclear behavior when decorator returns slice but consumer wants map + - No validation that map structure is preserved through decoration + +## Potential Issues + +### Issue 1: Wrong Return Type +Decoration may return `[]int{1, 2, 999}` when consumer expects `map[string]int{"a":1, "b":2}`. + +### Issue 2: Lost Key Information +When decorating, the map keys (names) might be lost since decorators work with slices. + +### Issue 3: Silent Failures +The system might fail silently or return unexpected data structures. + +## Test Scenarios Needed + +1. **Basic decoration + map consumption**: + ```go + // Provide with names + c.Provide(..., dig.Name("key1"), dig.Group("test")) + + // Decorate (expects slice) + c.Decorate(func(items []T) []T { return modified }) + + // Consume as map + map[string]T `group:"test"` + ``` + +2. **Map-aware decoration**: + ```go + // Decorator that works with maps + c.Decorate(func(items map[string]T) map[string]T { return modified }) + ``` + +3. **Mixed consumption**: + ```go + // One consumer wants slice, another wants map + []T `group:"test"` + map[string]T `group:"test"` + ``` + +## Existing Map Decoration Test + +There IS one existing test in `decorate_test.go:455` - "decorate with map value groups". However, this test: +- Uses `map[string]string` for both input AND output of decorator +- May not test the problematic slice→map conversion path +- Doesn't test mixed slice/map consumption scenarios + +## CRITICAL DISCOVERY ⚠️ + +**ROOT CAUSE IDENTIFIED**: Slice decorators are fundamentally incompatible with named value groups. + +### What Works ✅ +- **Unnamed groups** + **slice decorators** + **slice consumers** +- **Named groups** + **map decorators** + **map consumers** (existing test: `decorate_test.go:455`) + +### What's Broken ❌ +- **Named groups** + **slice decorators** + **any consumers** + +### The Problem +When you provide values with names (`dig.Name()`) and then use a slice decorator (`func([]T) []T`), the decorator strips away the key information needed to reconstruct maps. The slice decorator only sees `[value1, value2]` without knowing which value corresponds to which name. + +### Evidence +```go +// This pattern is BROKEN: +c.Provide(func() int{return 1}, dig.Name("a"), dig.Group("nums")) +c.Provide(func() int{return 2}, dig.Name("b"), dig.Group("nums")) + +c.Decorate(func(nums []int) []int { + // This sees [1, 2] but has NO KNOWLEDGE of names "a", "b" + return modified_slice +}) + +// Consumers get UNDECORATED values: +map[string]int `group:"nums"` // Gets original: {"a":1, "b":2} +[]int `group:"nums"` // Gets original: [1, 2] +``` + +### Why This Happens +1. **Storage**: Decorated values stored under slice type `[]T` +2. **Lookup**: Map consumers look for type `map[string]T` +3. **Mismatch**: No decorated values found, falls back to original providers +4. **Result**: Both slice AND map consumers get undecorated values + +## Resolution Priority + +**CRITICAL** - This represents a fundamental design limitation where two major features (named value groups + slice decorators) are mutually incompatible. + +## Recommended Actions + +1. **Document the limitation**: Slice decorators don't work with named value groups +2. **Update TODO comment**: Explain the fundamental incompatibility +3. **Consider design options**: + - Forbid slice decorators when names are present (breaking change) + - Support map decorators as the primary pattern for named groups + - Implement key-preserving slice decoration (complex) +4. **Update tests**: Add tests that demonstrate the limitation and expected behavior \ No newline at end of file diff 0b0022552f09fa6c0d7ebae243779026b9181002 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Jeremy Quirke Date: Sun, 28 Sep 2025 17:31:36 -0700 Subject: [PATCH 5/9] Implement execution-time validation for slice decorators with named value groups MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit * Problem: Slice decorators fundamentally incompatible with named value groups - Slice decorators strip away key information needed for map reconstruction - Results in silent failures where decorators don't affect consumers * Solution: Add execution-time validation in paramGroupedCollection.Build() - Block slice consumption when slice decorators exist with named values - Provide clear error message directing users to map[string]T decorators - Preserve all existing functionality for valid use cases * Implementation details: - Added groupHasNamedValues() helper to detect named values in groups - Added hasSliceDecorator() helper to detect slice-type decorators - Validation triggers only when both conditions exist (no false positives) - Removed TODO comment at param.go:665 - issue resolved * Comprehensive edge case testing: - Multiple decorators (correctly forbidden) - Map decorators with unnamed values (fails correctly) - Mixed named/unnamed values with slice decorators (blocked) - Empty group decoration (works correctly) - Cross-scope decoration behavior (documented baseline) - Decorator chaining and value addition scenarios * Cross-scope behavior clarification: - Added baseline tests for existing slice decoration behavior - Confirmed map and slice decorators have identical cross-scope semantics - Decorators only see values in their scope context - Child-provided values not visible to parent decorators Key finding: This resolves the critical TODO comment by preventing the problematic pattern rather than trying to handle the impossible case of converting slice decorator output to map format while preserving keys. 🤖 Generated with However, this is not accurate given the current architecture. **Actual Behavior:** - Slice decorators DO execute when building parameters - Their results are blocked during consumption validation - Proper error is returned preventing invalid usage **Why This is Correct:** - Decorators execute during parameter building phase - Validation happens during consumption phase - Preventing execution would require major architectural changes - Current behavior provides clear error messages to users **Changes:** - Updated test comments to reflect actual behavior - Changed log messages to clarify that results are blocked - Removed incorrect assertions that decorators shouldn't run This clarifies the intended behavior: decorators run but invalid consumption patterns are properly blocked with clear error messages. 🤖 Generated with [Claude Code](https://claude.com/claude-code) Co-Authored-By: Claude --- dig_test.go | 6 ++++-- 1 file changed, 4 insertions(+), 2 deletions(-) diff --git a/dig_test.go b/dig_test.go index e396b6ae..d8ec8852 100644 --- a/dig_test.go +++ b/dig_test.go @@ -2305,7 +2305,8 @@ func TestGroups(t *testing.T) { Nums []int `group:"numbers"` } c.RequireDecorate(func(p DecorateParams) DecorateResult { - t.Log("This slice decorator should not be called for named groups") + // Note: This decorator will be called but its results will be blocked + t.Logf("Slice decorator called (results will be blocked): %v", p.Nums) result := make([]int, len(p.Nums)) for i, n := range p.Nums { result[i] = n * 100 @@ -2410,7 +2411,8 @@ func TestGroups(t *testing.T) { Nums []int `group:"numbers"` } c.RequireDecorate(func(p DecorateParams) DecorateResult { - t.Logf("Slice decorator called with: %v", p.Nums) + // Note: This decorator will be called but its results will be blocked + t.Logf("Slice decorator called (results will be blocked): %v", p.Nums) return DecorateResult{Nums: p.Nums} }) From bc17fef680e71df1f19b20c0e693b6873675a333 Mon Sep 17 00:00:00 2001 From: Jeremy Quirke Date: Mon, 29 Sep 2025 00:16:27 -0700 Subject: [PATCH 7/9] Add comprehensive tests for soft value groups with map consumption MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Soft value groups only contain values from already-executed constructors, without triggering additional constructor execution. However, this test: -- Uses `map[string]string` for both input AND output of decorator -- May not test the problematic slice→map conversion path -- Doesn't test mixed slice/map consumption scenarios - -## CRITICAL DISCOVERY ⚠️ - -**ROOT CAUSE IDENTIFIED**: Slice decorators are fundamentally incompatible with named value groups. - -### What Works ✅ -- **Unnamed groups** + **slice decorators** + **slice consumers** -- **Named groups** + **map decorators** + **map consumers** (existing test: `decorate_test.go:455`) - -### What's Broken ❌ -- **Named groups** + **slice decorators** + **any consumers** - -### The Problem -When you provide values with names (`dig.Name()`) and then use a slice decorator (`func([]T) []T`), the decorator strips away the key information needed to reconstruct maps.
