Can't add children to reference when it's opened in a new panel

1. I created a node called Test Node.
2. I copied the node as a reference and pasted it below the original one.
3. I opened the reference in a new panel.
4. I tried adding children to that node, but wasn't able to.

• It works when editing the original in a new panel.
• I am able to edit existing children under the referenced node.
