bytes_to_markdown (universal "to markdown" converter)

get_markdown is a comprehensive solution for converting various document formats to markdown text using Python. We'll use popular libraries that can handle different file types.

1. Supported Formats:

   • PDF (.pdf)
   • Microsoft Word (.docx, .doc)
   • Microsoft Excel (.xlsx, .xls)
   • Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx, .ppt)
   • HTML (.html)

2. Conversion Approach:

   • Uses contextlib.suppress(ImportError) to gracefully handle missing libraries
   • Preserves as much formatting as possible
   • Converts to markdown with semantic structure (headings, etc.)
   • Provides a fallback method for unsupported formats

3. Libraries Used:

   • pypdf for PDF conversion
   • mammoth for Word documents
   • pandas for Excel files
   • python-pptx for PowerPoint
   • html2text for HTML conversion

4. Fallback Mechanism:

   • Attempts to decode bytes with multiple encodings
   • If all else fails, encodes the bytes in base64 to preserve content

The (full) dependencies one would need to install to convert all these types is:

pip install pypdf mammoth pandas python-pptx html2text

Limitations and Potential Improvements:

• Some complex formatting might not translate perfectly
• Large files could consume significant memory
• Not all document structures will convert identically
