Linux/CachyOS: native performance, graphics-settings slowdown, and load times

I might need some help with Linux.

After you mentioned that other Linux users were giving it the thumbs up, I decided to try Windows.

Both the RX 580 and the RTX 3070 deliver high frame rates. However, on Cachy OS, it doesn't go above 30 fps, with performance issues both in the game itself and in the menus. While it's true that I had experienced good performance with the RTX 3070 in some other builds, I'm not entirely sure what the problem might be. I don't know if other Linux users could help me.

On another note, I'm having problems with accents in Spanish. The image I'm sending you is black and white because it's been trying to load for a while.

I decided to run tests on Linux, but using Wine instead of the native version. The result is improved performance, both in terms of scene load and frame rate.

I can confirm that openQ4 have very long loading times on Linux, much longer than even original native build. Something definitely is not right.

Could you run some tests using Wine? This way we might be able to draw some conclusions and help the developer?

So far I've only been able to test it on the RTX 3070. It maintains 60 frames per second and loading times have improved. However, there's still a performance drop when entering the graphics settings menu.

Spanish accents are still displaying incorrectly, corrupting the words "MENÚS/MENÁ S", "SÍ/SÁ"...

If you reload a save without exiting the game, some errors occur. In the following image, I've marked in red the body in the void and the debris that shouldn't appear until the central corpse turns over.

This error has happened to me a couple of times, but I'm not sure how to cause it again.

I split the bundled symptoms by what is actually resolved and what still needs current measurements.

Fixed in 3f6d35c1:

• Spanish UTF-8 accents are converted to the stock CP1252/font encoding (including the reported MENÚS case).
• in-place reload now stops the game sound world and frees stale render definitions before entity teardown.

Performance/load work:

• a635c622 improved Linux exact-case/mixed-case asset lookup.
• 9adb69a3 added generated-image/collision caching and load-phase timing; your later RTX 3070 report showed 60 FPS and better loads.
• current cc3a2d59 fixes a remaining high-com_maxfps loading-screen redraw pathology and is newer than v0.10.

This remains the canonical follow-up to #69, not a duplicate. Still open: native-vs-Wine performance, current load time, and the Settings → System slowdown.

For a current build, please provide before/after FPS and frame-time while entering that panel, whether it is from the main menu or in-game pause, panel/scroll position, resolution/window mode, renderer/provider, r_swapInterval, com_maxfps, and a log captured with:

Thanks again for the detailed follow-up. I now have a controlled current-build comparison that reaches the actual Settings -> Display panel (the earlier automation was only highlighting Settings, so I corrected the named GUI event and repeated it).

Conditions: stock retail PK4s, 1280x720 selected, windowed, r_swapInterval 0, com_maxfps 0, requested 8x MSAA, and engine-side frame/renderer metrics plus engine screenshot captures.

Results:

• Windows / NVIDIA RTX 4060: main menu 4.45 ms / 224.8 Hz; Display 6.75 ms / 148.1 Hz. Renderer work rises from about 29 draws / 94 KiB uploads / 1 ms GPU to 57 draws / 144 KiB / 2 ms GPU.
• Native SDL Wayland in WSL: main 67.38 ms / 14.8 Hz; Display 78.41 ms / 12.8 Hz.
• SDL X11/XWayland in the same environment: main 70.07 ms / 14.3 Hz; Display 74.88 ms / 13.4 Hz.

The Linux absolute numbers are not a valid NVIDIA/AMD performance result: gfxInfo identifies Mesa llvmpipe (LLVM 20.1.2), so that environment is software-rendered. It is still useful structurally: native Wayland and X11 both complete cleanly, the verified Display panel adds the expected extra rows/draws, and neither shows a panel-specific runaway beyond that extra work. The Windows hardware run likewise shows a measurable relative cost but no low-frame-rate failure.

I am keeping this open because WSL/llvmpipe cannot substitute for your CachyOS + RTX 3070 driver path. When you can, could you attach one current log covering main menu -> Display with the previously requested com_showFramePacing 2, com_speeds 1, and r_rendererMetrics 1, plus the gfxInfo output? The GL_VENDOR / GL_RENDERER lines and the two before/after frame-pacing snapshots should let us tell whether your remaining drop is driver/provider, synchronization, or a particular section/scroll position. No need to retest the already-fixed Spanish and reload symptoms here.
