For what it's worth, there is no official 1.0.2 piefed release, so there must be some modifications that quokk have implemented on their end.

The expected behavior of the /community/list endpoint after PR 1048 is that the description field is returned if there is any description. If the description field is absent, then that means that there is no description for the community. It should be said that this wasn't always true for older versions of the code, so instances that haven't updated might not return description properly until they update.

Looking forward, the 1.1 (somewhat more) stable release is coming very soon, so hopefully that helps incentivize instances to update for more consistent api results. Also, api input and output validation is going to be a big focus of mine in future releases, so the situation should be more stable.
