I built this home lab to move beyond theory and develop practical experience with physical infrastructure, networking, virtualization, Linux administration, storage, structured cabling, and troubleshooting.
The environment allows me to work directly with rack-mounted Dell server hardware, Cisco networking equipment, patch panels, custom Ethernet cabling, Proxmox virtualization, Linux systems, network-attached storage, and different RAID arrangements.
The main learning goals are to:
- Understand how physical server, network, and storage components connect
- Develop safe and organized rack-installation practices
- Build and test custom Ethernet cables
- Improve confidence with patch panels, switch ports, and cable management
- Practise IP configuration and connectivity testing
- Install and administer Proxmox
- Deploy and troubleshoot Linux systems
- Configure storage pools and network shares
- Compare RAID layouts
- Document technical work clearly
- Build repeatable troubleshooting habits
- Protect sensitive infrastructure information
