How should the origin of the wave be determined?

At the Solar in Sonoma meeting, there was some discussion about how the origin of the wave could be automatically determined for rotation purposes. We could:

1. Read in a location automatically, for example from a flare catalogue.
2. Use an algorithm to analyse the images and estimate the wavefront origin.
3. Some combination of 1) and 2).
   4)...?

Some of the discussion suggested that option 1) could lead to significant errors, as the wavefront origin is often not the same as an active region or flare location.

Steve's quick dismissal notwithstanding, we should be keeping this issue in our minds as per the workshop discussion. Starting with (1) is the tractable way to go, but we will need to understand how sensitive this approach is to an inappropriately chosen wave origin, since it is "known" that waves are not necessarily centered at the flare.

I think it'd be Nice if as part of the wave characterization we can provide some statistic of how sinusoidal the wavefront is, and thus some indication of the potential poor-ness of choice of the wave origin. Of course, there can be many other effects that would distort the wavefront, and they may even cancel each other out...
