Continuing this thread: although your function works well most of the time, occasionally I get this error:

Debugger entered--Lisp error: (void-function nil)
  nil((:info index :status running :checked 65499 :updated 1 :cleaned-up 0))
  mu4e--server-filter(#<process  *mu4e-server*> "\37647\377(:info index :status running :checked 149539 :updated 1 :cleaned-up 0)\n")

When that happens, mu4e no longer updates until I start a new Emacs session. Have you experienced this?
