Where the project actually is

Early. The compiler works end-to-end — parser, type checker, ownership analysis,
LLVM backend — with 17,734 tests that must pass before any commit, green across
all four targets. It also still crashes, the standard library is thin, and there
is one maintainer directing the agents. Don't put it in production. Do try it and
file what breaks.

What your sponsorship pays for

This project's main cost isn't the maintainer's time — it's inference. The
compiler is built by AI agents on a ~$200/month subscription, and that budget is
the direct limit on how fast it improves. Sponsorship goes to:

• Agent inference — the largest line item, and the one that sets the pace
• CI across four targets — Linux, macOS, Windows, and WASM on every commit
• Infrastructure — docs site, domains, project email
• Reactor — building the open-source implementation of Bounded-Autonomy Software Engineering, so the system that builds Promise isn't locked to Promise.

Promise is also a bet: that an AI agent, with limited human oversight, can build
large, complex, high-quality software you maintain for years — not throwaway
snippets. The compiler is the first evidence, and the methodology behind it
(Bounded-Autonomy Software Engineering) is published in full. Sponsoring this

Promise is developed by Promise Lang LLC, a Texas company that exists to hold the
project's IP and keep it permissively licensed. Everything ships under both the
Apache License, Version 2.0 and the MIT License.
