Third-party notices & licensing

This project's own licensing

Simple NetMon is multi-licensed by area:

Path Licence File
Everything not listed below (default) Apache-2.0 LICENSE
internal/firewall/ MIT LICENSE-MIT
internal/server/web/ (the dashboard) AGPL-3.0 LICENSE-AGPL

Each of those directories also carries a copy of its own licence file. Per-file SPDX-License-Identifier headers state the licence authoritatively.

What a distributed binary is

A compiled binary of Simple NetMon is AGPL-3.0. Two things force strong copyleft on the linked whole:

  • github.com/0xrawsec/golang-etw is GPL-3.0, and
  • internal/server/web/ is AGPL-3.0 and is embedded into the server binary and served over HTTP.

Apache-2.0 and MIT are both compatible with (A)GPL-3.0 in this direction, so the combination is permitted; the resulting binary is governed by AGPL-3.0. In particular, if you offer Simple NetMon to users over a network, AGPL-3.0 §13 requires you to offer them the corresponding source. Normal local use (the dashboard served to your own browser on localhost) does not involve a remote user, so §13 is dormant in that case.

If you ever need a non-copyleft binary, you must first replace both the ETW layer (GPL-3.0) and re-license internal/server/web/.

Third-party components

Component Purpose Licence
github.com/0xrawsec/golang-etw ETW session/consumer & TDH parsing (Windows) GPL-3.0
github.com/go-ole/go-ole COM interop for the Windows Firewall API MIT
modernc.org/sqlite (+ modernc.org/libc et al.) pure-Go SQLite, no cgo BSD-3-Clause
golang.org/x/sys/windows Windows syscalls (process image, token) BSD-3-Clause

Not currently bundled, but planned

  • MaxMind GeoLite2 (GeoIP/ASN). If added: requires a free MaxMind account to download, attribution ("includes GeoLite2 data created by MaxMind") when displaying data, and compliance with the GeoLite2 EULA (no unlicensed redistribution). Download it with the user's own licence key at runtime — do not bundle the database.
  • Npcap is intentionally not used, avoiding its redistribution restrictions. If a raw-capture mode is ever added, Npcap must be installed by the user (or licensed via Npcap OEM), never silently bundled.

Trademarks

Product names are used here only to describe and compare, under nominative fair use. All trademarks are the property of their respective owners.
