Featured images are the bane of aggregated sites. Most users do not understand that a featured image on their blog posts are part of content not published to RSS. I have tried several variations of plugins for Feed Wordpress and this one seems to work the most reliably (besides it's tendency to keep making local copies of the same image).
The one thing that never works is the setting for default featured image; despite adding this, I always get blanks for syndicated posts lacking any image in the content.
Trying a plugin like https://wordpress.org/plugins/default-featured-image/ did not help, it must not hook in at the right time...
I write this in near zero hope of a response. It's sad that developers ignore their own github issues...
