We’re using Discussions as a place to explore issues that are more open ended than the specific and more finite tasks that are best suited for issues.

Inspired by a chat with @chantelwetzel-noaa, here's a little more detail on discussions vs issues adapted from notes from a 2024-12-05 discussion among FIMS project folks (thanks to @kellijohnson-NOAA of course):

What you want to communicate	Where to post
Ephemeral stuff (“anybody want to help with this thing tomorrow?”)	walk down the hall, chat, email (would a Lingcod Google Space be helpful?)
Questions and ideas that aren’t yet actionable tasks	GitHub Discussions
Actionable tasks	GitHub Issues

Once a discussion has reached the point where we have come to a conclusion (e.g. we've done all this research and here's the plan for how to implement it), then we can use the "create issue from discussion" link in the bottom right of the discussion page.

If an issue ends up too open ended, it can be converted to a discussion via the "convert to discussion" link in the bottom right of the issue page.

Thanks Ian for laying this out guidance. Speaking for myself, I personally do not want a Lingcod google space. Its another thing to check, and while it has the benefit of being retained, Id rather have that retention occur in a github discussion, or our notes document. Moreover, we already have the capability to chat with each other. Any discussion topic not suitable for github or our notes probably is targeted to just a few people, which is perfect for a chat.
