Spring week 10 announcements

Hello all,

First, I want to echo what you have already heard: you have all done an amazing job working up the data, putting it into a model, analyzing the model, and writing everything up into clear concise reports. The fact that the review was delayed to August does not reflect the quality of your work. On the contrary, you should be proud of what you have accomplished! The decisions were made at a very high level. They reflect concerns that were generally not scientific in nature, and you could not have controlled them.

Plan for August review:

• The review in August is currently scheduled for 8/11-12. They may need to add a day, given these reviews were not originally on the agenda.
• You are all invited to participate and present your assessments. However, the decision to participate is totally up to you, and will not affect authorship of the report.
• The meeting was planned to be remote, but that may change. If it is in person, Owen will try to ensure it is located in Seattle, which should allow more of you to attend in person.
• The reports are very close to done. We will not be asking for additional revisions with the extra time. You are certainly free to wrap things up at a less frenetic pace, though we do still want them completed soon-ish, while everything is still fresh in your minds. Please also do a final read-through for typos, grammar, etc., that might not have happened with the deadline crunch...
  • Widow got a set of final comments from Owen on Friday. Please address those by ~Friday this week, and then you are DONE. (I am giving you a deadline because I know what happens to me without deadlines, but consider it an extremely soft deadline.)
  • Yelloweye, please send a document to Owen for a final review by the end of the week. (Same advice on deadlines applies.)

Class for the remainder of the quarter:

• This week was scheduled as practice presentations, and then "class" next week was scheduled as the SSC groundfish subcommittee review on Wednesday.
• We will still do final presentations next week, during the regular class time on Thursday and Friday. Your audience will be the instructors and perhaps some other assessment scientists in Seattle. The idea is these presentations will form the basis for the presentations on these assessments in August, but we'd like to get some material on slides now, while it is still fresh. This is the "final exam" for anyone enrolled for credit, but everyone on the STAT is welcome (and encouraged!) to contribute.
• THIS WEEK we will still be doing "practice talks," with yelloweye on Thursday and widow on Friday. I put it in quotes because, without the looming SSC review, there is a lot less pressure, and you have all been working very hard, so consider this your time with the instructors to use however you think would be most helpful to you right now. We will likely do another round of practice talks immediately before the August review, if any of you choose to lead those presentations.
