you can connect the C64 Ultimate as a terminal, but you probably don't want to.
the C64U doesn't have a user port, you need the Internal User Port Breakout Board from commodore.net
then you need the user port to rs232 adapter from a company like https://www.simulant.uk/ but make sure you get one that operated on TTL levels, not actual RS232 levels. and when you buy all that stuff and hook it up, maybe it will work, but then keep in mind the terminal programs available for the C64 and the screen resolution limitations, you'll get 40 columns, i think Novaterm can do 80, i'm not sure.

you can use modern keyboards with the C64U, but you cannot use the C64U as a keyboard for other machines, it's built to directly interface with the C64U hardware.

don't listen to anything i say, i'm an idiot on the internet.

From what I understand, The New C64 has a built-in virtual modem.
If that's the case, you should technically be able to connect to the TTY of your IMSAI8080esp by using a terminal/BBS browsing program along with this TTY/Telnet gateway (see my post here : https://github.com/orgs/thehighnibble/discussions/281) running on a PC or a Raspberry Pi.
It's far from being a simple/direct/elegant solution, but it should work.
