Codex App fails to start on Windows with HW capability error #31489

What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?

Unknown. The app fails to start before I can open the "About Codex" dialog. Installed from Microsoft Store. I also tried checking for updates with: winget upgrade Codex -s msstore Result: No available update found. No newer package version is available from the configured sources.

What subscription do you have?

What platform is your computer?

Microsoft Windows NT 10.0.26200.0 x64

What issue are you seeing?

The Codex desktop app fails to start on Windows immediately after launch.

Error dialog:

Codex failed to start.

(code=3221226505, signal=null).
Most recent error: Fatal Error: HW capability found: 0xFFCBFBFF 0xFFFAF38B, but HW capability requested: 0x200000 0x00.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Install Codex from the Microsoft Store.
  2. Click "Open" / launch the Codex app.
  3. The app shows an error dialog and does not start.

Expected behavior:
The Codex desktop app should open normally.

Actual behavior:
The app immediately fails to start with the HW capability error above.

What I tried:

  • Checked for updates using the Microsoft Store / winget.
  • Ran:

winget upgrade Codex -s msstore

The result was:

No available update found.
No newer package version is available from the configured sources.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

  1. Install Codex from the Microsoft Store.
  2. Open Codex from the Start Menu or click "Open" in the Microsoft Store.
  3. The app immediately fails to start and shows the following error dialog:

Codex failed to start.

(code=3221226505, signal=null).
Most recent error: Fatal Error: HW capability found: 0xFFCBFBFF 0xFFFAF38B, but HW capability requested: 0x200000 0x00.

No code snippet is involved because the issue happens before the Codex app opens.

What is the expected behavior?

The Codex desktop app should open normally on Windows after installation from the Microsoft Store.
