• the confusing thing for users is, that while writing, it shows the right content

Even more confusing: on iOS client it shows the correct (or incorrect from server perspective) message:

Markdown in general seems to work on iOS (tested with cursive)

I could imagine (from a far and rather unqualified perspective) solutions like those:

• only apply formatting if it's not changing the content (bold, block, code, ...)
• server-side option to disable markdown in total
