version 34 is nudging me to "fix" the fact that I have the classic sync and macos file provider both active at the same time

Bug description

The share dialog is looking incomplete.

I just upgraded to 34.0.0 (and by now downgraded again as the sync client suddenly doesn'T sync tons of bundle files anymore it synced fine for years, but that is a separate issue). It then nudged me that it must be wrong that I have both file provider and classic sync activated.

I use the classic sync to have my files in my home folder directly, with selective sync. This is not possible currently with file provider.

I then have file provider also activated in parallel to have a way to lazy load files that I don't have all the time on my mac. This has been working fine for years now - so I don't know why this is something that would need "fixing".

Steps to reproduce

1. Right click on the file
2. Click on Share Options
3. The share dialog does not display the option to share by e-mail

Expected behavior

When clicking on the share dialog, share by e-mail should be an option.

Same issue here (same system). I sync 4 servers and it seems the client wants me to decide to use classic sync or virtual folders for all of them.
Chose classic sync and now the one server (Nextcloud Hub 26 Winter(33.0.6)) I wanted to use virtual folders for is not synced anymore. Almost all files are gone from sync folder.

Solution: downgraded to 33.0.7

Would be nice if someone could explain this decision :/

@udoschmitz Upfront, please be aware of this known issue.

Since the inception of the file provider framework on macOS 12 (it got pulled from 11 due to severe issues after initial release) in 2021, the use of a FinderSync and file provider extension in parallel by the same app were not possible. This simply is a fact something third-party developers have to deal with. We cannot reconcile that. 😑 I had the same old story years ago already in a different company with a different app already. Apple intended file providers to be the successors to classic sync clients. In practice, this means: as soon as an app has a file provider domain, it breaks the classic Finder integration.

This continuously causes confusion among users and customers and results in the most regular kind of issue reported for macOS. There were even change requests in this regard by large subscribers who represent a lot of users and their user experiences. We want to make the communication and choice more explicit but also get a better grip on the fragile FinderSync extension lifecycle which is controlled by Finder (not us) and often sabotaged by other third party extensions (like Adobe 🙄) we cannot do anything against. While the file provider is ought to replace classic folder sync in the long run, the option remains for those who really want it — at the low cost of a mutually exclusive choice.

I understand, if this upsets or disappoints you. This is one of the unpleasant choices and directions which a project occasionally needs to take to improve for the majority of its user base while it leaves some behind. 😔

Because the initial report is only a request for clarification on this product design choice and I have elaborated on it in the name of our team, I hereby close this issue because the app works as expected in this regard.

@i2h3 I am still confused. I was part of the discussion when nextcloud didn't ship two binaries anymore, I know that I can't get classic sync to "show up" sync status in finder while fileprovider is active, that is okay. What I was confused with now is that this exact setup that has been working for a good amount of time is now suddenly marked as "decide either or or later" where "later" is "retain the status quo".

That would be fine by me. I have a problem that I have to choose either or because, as you may remember, virtual files are kinda broken for me. (#10070)
Two different sync apps would be nice…
