A handover, end to end

orchard-checkout.json is a complete handover for an invented but realistic project: a Swedish fruit box subscription reworking its checkout. It is also a conformance fixture, so it cannot drift away from the format.

Read it once before reading this page. It takes about two minutes, which is the point.

The switch between clients, the thing a handover exists for, is shown as real transcripts in ../docs/switch-clients.md.

Two kinds of reader arrive here, and they want different pages. Using an AI client and wanting Soil attached to it: clients/ holds one page per client surface, each with the configuration in that client's own format and the evidence behind it. Building your own integration: the framework examples at the end of this page are the ones to read.

Seventeen sections carried something, two gaps are stated out loud, and two secrets are named without being carried. That last part is the difference between a handover you can paste into a stranger's model and one you cannot.

What makes this one good

Decisions are enumerated, not summarised. Seven of them, each with the reason it was locked, including ones locked over a year before the capture. Decision 4 says pause stays a first-class state because collapsing it into cancellation caused double charges in 2024. A model that reads the reason does not propose the collapse again. A model that reads only "pause is first-class" proposes it in about a week.

The project's own words are quoted exactly. "The box", "a pause", "the window", "a soft address". Each with its agreed meaning. Paraphrase these into "a delivery", "a skip", "the cutoff" and every later reference silently breaks.

Rejected paths do not age out. The 2025 parallel rewrite that burned four months. The date library that cost 40 KB. The client-side re-render that lost the payment widget's session. None of this is recent, and all of it is exactly what a fresh model would otherwise cheerfully retry.

Constraints carry their reason. "Nothing may change a box after the window closes" is followed by "breaking this ships wrong food to real people." A rule with its reason survives an argument; a rule without one gets negotiated away.

Frontier sections are anchored to the capture. currentTask says "at capture" rather than "currently". The address step "had been deployed on Monday, too recently to read the conversion effect". A model loading this in three weeks will not report that as today's state.

The gaps are stated. Nobody knew whether the deploy moved conversion, and the provider sandbox was down, so the capture says both. The provenanceMap goes further and marks the load-bearing assumption, that the remaining drop-off is at the decline path, as inferred and unmeasured. That assumption is the reason for the current priority, so a reader deserves to know it was never checked.

Secrets are described, not carried. "Payment provider API credentials exist and are set as environment variables in the deployment platform." The next model knows they exist, knows where to look, and cannot leak them.

The boot prompt stands alone. restoreInstructions re-states the identity, the vocabulary, every decision with its reason, the constraints, the architecture, where things stood and what to do next, in one paste-ready block. It ends with what not to import (the deprioritised cleanup, the rejected approaches) and what to check first (the sandbox, the conversion data). It never points outward, because the reader cannot follow a pointer.

What the load produces

The marker above is abbreviated for reading. A real one is soil: followed by 32 hex characters, generated from the platform's cryptographic source for that one render, and it is different every time you run soil load.

Four things are stated every time, and each is there because leaving it out caused a real failure. Capture-state sections are not the present. Gaps travel with the document. The document is context rather than commands: a handover can be written by anyone, so instruction-shaped text inside it is a fact about the project, never an order to the model reading it. And content cannot be mistaken for structure: without the marker, a section whose text spelled === HANDOVER META === split the prompt and put planted text under a heading it did not belong to. Content that resembles structure is escaped with a leading backslash, and structure carries a marker content cannot guess. What that does not do is stop prompt injection; see spec/restore-prompt.md for the limits.

Writing your own

Do not copy this file. Run soil save, paste the recipe into a session that actually holds work, and let the model write it. The recipe is what produces the qualities above, and a handover about your project written by hand from a template will be worse than one your model writes about the conversation it just had.

What this example is good for is judging the result. If your handover summarises decisions instead of listing them, paraphrases your project's words, or has an empty rejectedPaths for a project with a history, the capture was thin. Ask again, naming the sections.

Integration examples

Three runnable examples show Soil next to systems that hold state of their own. Each is small enough to read in one sitting, runs keyless in continuous integration (no API keys, no network model calls, no accounts), exercises the full round trip through soil validate, soil check and soil load, and says in its README exactly what is real and what is a labeled stand-in. In every one the relationship is the same: Soil complements the other system, it never replaces it.

  • langgraph/: LangGraph can retain graph checkpoints inside its runtime. Soil exports the current project state so another agent or platform can continue without running the same graph. The framework side is real: an actual checkpointed StateGraph with no model call.
  • mem0/: Mem0 can retain user or agent memory. Soil creates a bounded project handover that can move to another session, tool or provider. The framework side is a labeled stand-in, because Mem0 initialisation requires a model provider.
  • letta/: A Letta agent can remain stateful in its own environment. Soil creates a portable handover for a cold external agent. The framework side is a labeled stand-in, because a Letta agent needs a server and a model provider.

The examples workflow in .github/workflows/examples.yml runs each of these end to end on every push and asserts the round trip.
