Performance of the plugin

We have clients using this plugin that are experiencing slow page load. That is, the page loads fairly quick, but it's not possible to click on anything for quite a while...

I know there have been a discussion about it here #23 as well where it was instructed to use Chrome or Firefox, but in this case we have tried it out in Chrome

We, Idaho State University (ISU), have had the code in pull request #41 on our production server since early November 2021. We have not had any issues and the complaints about the page being slow have gone to 0. This is the commit from the pull request

We are experiencing this same slowness at Swarthmore College. Going to give the commit by @mspall a go, but this is something that should be looked at.
