Feature Request - The User Story

Hi Michael,

Is it possible to add a new shortcode to FilterCodes that would return the total number of sections in the current course?
...or maybe make a "sectioncount" attribute in an existing shortcode?

My wish is to (easily) inform Instructors when they have too many sections in their Moodle course before it prevents them from adding a new section. The OneTopic course format and other formats can visibly hide sub-sections, and that makes it too easy for old or defunct/hidden content to go unseen. We want to prod our course authors/managers to de-weed their gardens before they get over-run. ;)

Well, we allow the OneTopic course format in our Moodle. It (and other course formats) allow for sub-sections to be added in each section. Thus, it's happened that a course author has hit our sitewide limit on max number of sections in a course (in our case, that's 150), and are mystified when they cannot add a new section.

Some course formats make it hard for a teacher or author to actually see how many sections are in their existing course without opening up sections and counting them. I can query Moodle based on a course ID, but a self-serve option for our users would be more convenient for everyone. Being able to embed that value into a Text block or another construct that they can easily reference makes it easier to troubleshoot. So, I thought of your wonderful plugin, which we've used a lot to do things based on Moodle's environment, user roles, and whatnot. :) I'd be very grateful for this consideration!
