I struggled trying to get flashrom on my rpi3b+ to consistently see the winbond chips on my T440p; It would find the chips once and then go back to reporting no chip could be detected.
Turns out this is because pins 3 and 7 on the IC need to be pulled high, not left floating as the README says.
